Comping - the act of entering competitions. It's something that some of us do as a hobby for fun in our spare time. Anything that we win is a bonus. There are quite a few sites on the interweb that are dedicated to listing competitions that can be entered either for free online, or by post/text. Different sites suit different people, but googling UK competition websites will give you a variety of ones to have a look at if you want to give it a go. SuperluckyDi's website, which will pop up in the results, is a goldmine of information for both new and old compers. Any questions, just shout :)

£25 from Premium Bonds this month.
I got £25 from the Premium Bonds in December.

Currently I’m seeing a 6% return this year - however it has been for some PB that have been held for 20 years so for the complete period it is certainly a lot less! :D

They sent me a cheque, so I need to pay it in, but I can’t buy more as I need to purchase £100 minimum! Doh!

I keep wondering about premium bonds. Are they worth the investment?

There is a question.

Some people will tell you ‘no’. If you have money to invest then there are other financial products (ISA/Stocks&Shares/etc) that get you a better return. Or if you have some cash you want to put away each month, you should put it into a ‘battle chest’ to take up match betting where you will earn loads more.

Some people will tell you ‘yes’. It is no risk as you put in £1 and you can withdraw £1 at any time. I know that another site made a big thing about how Premium Bonds aren’t worth it due to there being a more than likely chance you’ll win nothing unless you have £10k+ in there.

Personally, I’m putting a little bit in there every month. It’s small enough that it isn’t impacting my life but large enough that over a year its a nice lump sum. I can then choose to withdraw it at the end of the year or keep it there. I’ll probably keep it there.

If I had them for 30-40 years then £1 in year one will be worth less than £1 in year 40 so as a long term investment product it probably isn’t a great one. But I don’t know many people who use it as a such. Most people I know use PB as a temporary store of a considerable sum of cash.

Making a profit on Premium Bonds is down to luck really. Some years I do far better than having the money in high interest investments, sometimes not. I treat them as a bit of fun - like the lottery, but without having to pay for a ticket. At the end of the day, my money is safe and I can withdraw it at any time and I might just win big.
@The Reverend I get any winnings re-invested into bonds. That way they go straight into the next draw and you circumvent the minimum £100 investment thingy :)
