Did anyone get those installed on your house during the last few years?

How much money do you save/make?

I always thought they looked quite ugly on houses

I don't have any but have done a lot of writing on this niche. General consensus is that since the government decreased the feed in tariff, getting them is not nearly as lucrative as it was previously. You can get solar panels on the "green deal" scheme where you pay back the cost of installing them through your power bills. How much you will make depends a lot on where you are and which direction your roof faces. Someone in Plymouth is probably going to make more than someone in Aberdeen.

Most experts agree it will take 20 years to recoup the cost of installing the solar panels in the first place so it's a long term project. And don't get into the "rent a roof" schemes where someone pays you to put panels on your roof as it causes legal problems when you come to sell and you're stuffed if the company goes bankrupt.

No. House was built with them on and I was the first tenant. The council houses in my area had a choice though.

My parents have solar panels on their house by choice, they are at the back and not that noticable to us any more. I'm not sure how long its been or how much they've saved but I do know that they get 'paid' for surplus energy produced by the panels that they don't use.

My parents have them, they actually make quite a bit from them. The got them several years ago on a government scheme which actually paid quite well (can't remember how much exactly)

They have 10 panels and they look great. Your picture is an awful example of what they look like Jon, I've never seen a house look that bad.

My parents are low users of electric, even though they have a big house they only use what they need. In the summer they will make around 9-12 units a day I'm sure(might be more, I'll have to ask my Dad later). They only use around 6!

I would have them if I had a bigger roof. We could only fit a few on our roof as its quite small. Also I would like a loft conversion at some point and it would be best to get that done first.

All valid points but from what I understand, all solar systems whether solar pv or solar for hot water behave differently on different properties. With so many variables involved i'm sure that some see excellent benefits and other less so.
Renewable's have come a long way since solar pv was first introduced, there are now solar powered heat pumps available for hot water too, and they use two thermodynamic panels on the side, ground or roof of a property (but I don't think the thermodynamic panels look as 'obvious' as some of the solar pv panels you see now). I know a plumber who is looking into a solar hot water system for a client.

I was wondering if this topic would come up!
We had them fitted in September last year, really only because we came into a small lump sum and wanted to put it to good use. We’ve submitted our first FIT reading before xmas so will find out soon how much we start to get back. We also now have an electric car and are waiting for a battery to be fitted!
Making the most of the solar is the key to the value,so if you are at home during the day and or can set things to run during the day it is ideal, and run them sequentially so as to maximise the solar you use.
The battery when it arrives means that we will be able to store energy we do not use each day and use that before we revert back to the grid.
I’ve been surprised how much solar we are still generating even in January (we have a phone app which tracks it).
In addition to the money aspect it’sfascinating being part of this alternative energy movement. I could go on for ages!

So we got our first fit payment - 50 for Sep/Oct/nov.
Unless February is very sunny then the next quarter will be less than that !
It will take literally years to recoup the cost of investment - it’s a long term thing !

How much was the investment you had to make?

It was around 7k for the panels but our roof is not ideally situated.
It’s not just about the return for us I have to admit, although that would be nice! We are expecting the summer months to generate a lot lot more b

Wow that’s a big investment!

Saying that I paid for #matchedbettingconservatory in 2016 which was far the biggest investment I’ve done in house and like you say these things are long term!

If electric cars take off like they are supposed to then this country is going to have to generate way more electricity than it does now to keep them all on charge. Being able to generate your own electricity may prove to be a very worth while investment.

Yes @homie - we’ve just got an electric car, it’s all part of a bigger picture for us

I would love to get some solar panels, but OH doesn't agree as he doesn't like the look of them and tbh it's low down on the list of priorities at the moment since we can't afford the outlay anyway!

I moved into a new build council house in 2011 and they have solar panels on the roof for heating the hot water. Its lovely, because with having a pre pay gas meter, it means if you run out of gas credit, you will always have hot water. In regards to looking ugly, mine are at the back of the house so you can't even see them unless you was to go snooping round the back garden! The saving you make is worth having them fitted, I would say.
