I'd never heard of this before. Does the pay vary from council to council? Sorry if this has been answered already, I read the first few pages of the thread and the last few but couldn't see an answer.

Thanks for the info @Jon. I've just sent an email to my local council for more information. So glad I stumbled across your site, lots of handy tips just keep flooding in!

Little over 2 months to go until the elections (less if you are doing postal vote counting!)

Where's everyone at with this?

Well, I've got my Presiding Officer appointment. I'm just waiting for the details of the training, which is usually straightforward.

If anyone is working on the elections in Watford, Gosport, Woking, Bromley or Slough, you might have to have training on Voter ID requirements, as voter ID is being trialled in those areas.

It's an experiment designed to combat electoral fraud. There have been a few examples of it in recent years (although not many) so they're experimenting with making it a mandatory requirement to bring your poll card, passport, driving licence or show a valid debit/credit card before you are issued with a ballot paper.

The pro- argument is that it will reduce the chances of electoral fraud. The anti- argument is it might suppress the vote of certain groups (elderly people, like my parents, for example, who don't have a passport or driving licence).

Though why anyone would be stupid enough to risk a jail sentence by voting twice in a local election is beyond me...

I'm working in one of the trial areas... not looking forward to the 2 - 3 hour training session. Those sessions are dry enough as it is. I fell asleep in the town hall last time!

Yeah the pay goes up slightly.

It's gonna be a fun day with people turning up without their ID moaning. I can hear them already...

"I've been voting my whole life and I've never had to do this..." etc etc

Or, 'I thought this was meant to be a secret ballot?'

My local authority was one of the areas that was considered for the trial, as we had a quite high profile case 4 or 5 years ago (a Poll Clerk got 18 months to spend at Her Majesty's pleasure on the back of it). Fortunately, we weren't selected

I've had my appointment for the count today. First time I've counted for a local election - just done General & referendum before. Still waiting to hear if I'll be opening postals this year or not.

I decided not to bother this time with the election - mostly because I forgot to send the forms back in time

The voter ID system makes sense. Having been a councillor in the past I know how upsetting it is for people who have their vote taken from them. It is worse for the ones who find out that their recently deceased relative somehow managed to cast a vote.
