I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the blogging section.

Anyway, I hate the word "blog". To me it has a horrible sound to it, and sounds too much like "bog", which either means toilet or "an area of wet muddy ground that is too soft to support a heavy body".

I don't even think we need it. There are plenty of other words that can be used instead: article, post, news, updates, journal, diary. They've got it all covered, they all sounds a lot better, and none of them can be accidentally misheard as bog. There was no need to invent this new word, which was really just a joke anyway because it was deliberately mistaking "weblog" for "we blog" rather than "web log".

I think Blog is very much a collective term

If you run a blog it wil be full of articles, evergreen content, updates, advertisements, toolkits, contact details etc.

Years ago that would just be called a Website so i'm not sure at which point it got turned to Blog lol

I'd say blogs are 'personal'. It also implies that it has dynamic (constantly updating) rather than static content.

This is where it gets confusing. Some people use the word to describe the website with the blog posts on it, whereas other people use it to describe the blog post itself, e.g. "I am writing a new blog".

Another thing about modern use of language I noticed (now that I've got your attention): the word email seems to be used incorrectly. People use the word "email" to refer to an individual message, but "emails" for the collective term. But if you think about the history of that word it doesn't quite make sense. Email means electronic mail. With mail, you don't say "I am writing a mail". You say "I am writing a letter". So, strictly speaking, we should be referring to the individual message as an e-letter, and the collective term should be e-mail (without an s). E-letters with file attachments should be called e-parcels.

Tune in tomorrow for my rant about the misuse of the word "literally". It will literally blow your mind...

I use the word blogger, to describe my job, but I don't say 'I've written a new blog' (to my knowledge anyway!) instead I say I've got a new post over on my website :D

Does the main money you make come from your blogging?

I make 5 figures + from bloggers, and 5 figures + from other online money-making methods like MB, surveys, eBay sales etc. It's a good split, not sure of the exact % anymore but probably tipping more towards blogging now that my earnings there are getting big.

Impressive!

How do you make your money from blogging? Advertising or affiliate links? Do you have many different niche websites?

Sponsored campaigns including social media
Event attendance
Presenting at events
Paid product reviews
Affiliates/banner adverts/sidebar adverts

Nope ;) I have three websites. Only one of them is active at the moment.

Technically a blog is a form of website. Just one which has your blog posts ordered in date order with newest posts appearing at the top.

It's also worth noting not all websites created with WordPress can be called blogs - as the plugin and theme directories are huge you can pretty much create any type of website you like with it. Magazine themes can create a traditional website for example but it can also be used to create directories

aye, she speaks the truth

The thing to remember is that we are 4/5+ years down the line with our blogs so you can't compare our income to someone just starting out!

Wow! I wish I'd had your level of success. I tried for years to make money with websites but never got anywhere close to that.

Do you want to show us some of your examples?

Running a blog is literally all about content and community. Once you have both you can then expose the community to affiliate links and also companies will come with sponsored post opportunities.

Thanks for the offer, Jon. Unfortunately, I got rid of most of my websites several years ago. The only websites I have now are the one I recently showed you with the WA articles on, plus two niche websites I've got no interest in doing anything more with.

One is https://synthsandsoftware.com, which I started because for years I've been into making electronic music. It turns out that there is a huge difference between making music and writing about music making equipment. I got very bored with it and totally lost interest.

The other website is a mini niche site I set up as an experiment because one of the senior members at WA did a case study webinar series where he made decent money from a mini niche site. So I set up https://bestbuytabletsunder100.com and another one about laptops, but I no longer have the laptops site. This tablet site did actually make a few Amazon commissions here and there, but I don't think it does anymore.

My big problem over the years has been that I've set up websites because I think they are good niche to make money, but then if they don't make much money after a while I lose interest. The party line at WA was always that you should create a website about something you are interested in, but the problem is the things I am genuinely interested in are not things that could really make any money.

I think for the moment I've put website stuff to one side, and I'm more interested in matched betting plus some of these phone apps that pay you for doing things.

Yeah I've definitely made my website about something I'm interested in and then gradually introduced income streams. I enjoy blogging :)
