We are all quick enough to criticize companies when they mess up so thought I would give a bit of credit to Royal Mail for their customer service. Back in February I sold some lego to a guy in Italy. All well and good until 6 weeks later I got an email from him saying he still hadn't received it. Exchanged a couple more emails to ensure he had checked with his local delivery office and made sure it hadn't been left with a neighbour. Foolishly, didn't send it tracked or insured because it was only a £18 item and tracking to Europe would have been too expensive for what the Lego was worth. So I gave him a refund and expected to take a loss on the item and the cost of posting it. A search on Royal Mail website showed I could make a claim for losses providing I had some evidence of posting and evidence of the cost of the item, which I did. So I submitted a claim, not pinning much hope on it but 5 days later a cheque arrive in the post for the full cost of the item and the postage I paid. It probably wasn't even Royal mail's fault as it most likely got lost in Italy's archaic postal system.
So on this occasion, well done Royal Mail.

Glad you got it sorted.

Italy is TERRIBLE for postage - by all accounts the worst in Western Europe. I see plenty of discogs sellers who don't sell to Italy because of stuff like these being a frequent occurrence!

Really frustrating having postal issues pushed back on you as a seller - a guy left me Neutral feedback claiming an item took 30 days to arrive. for one this was a lie as it had been about 24 days; secondly I posted it the day after payment; and lastly it was posted to Croatia over the Christmas period! Not a lot you can do about that really...

Ah.. Royal Mail.

So I sent a very important letter that contained a cheque to a business and I needed to know it had got there so I paid for tracking delivery where they beep the barcodes and you can find out it's status online.

Off the cheque went yet the online tracking still showed the letter as not having moved from the post office I handed it to even thought the business had confirmed they had received it. The reason for this it seems is that when posties deliver say 100+ bits of mail a day to a business if one of them has tracking they don't notice that one item individually and scan it!

A tracked item should have a number of tracks along the journey. If I had to guess, the label barcode got blurred and no-one cared.

They don't see penny one from me - I stick all my stamps on before I get to the post office which have all been bought at a 35-40% discount ;)

So if you were in my position, how would you prove you posted it?

By the way, I have quite a big stock pile of standard 2nd class and 2nd class large stamps that I bought a couple of years ago before one of the price rises. Am slowly working my way through them but have loads left. Question is once the Queen dies and Charles becomes King, do you think Royal Mail might cancel all the old Queen's head stamps and only accept the new Charlie ones?

You can still get it check and post marked at the post office and get a proof of postage receipt.

They've already been paid for them so I doubt they care :)

Yes they have been paid for; some of them back in 1971 ;)

I wonder if there are also stolen stamps that are in circulation. When a post-office is done over, the stamps would have been untraceable and usable without question.
It swings both ways, here's a story...

I had a bunch of 1st class stamps, about 120, which I had bought for about 60% face value; I wanted to free up some cash so sold them for about 80%ish face value in a job lot on ebay. The buyer? An address at/above a convenience store/post office!

If they buy stamps off me at 80% Face they're personally making 20% a sale - 14p a 1st class stamp - with no money going to Royal Mail as these sales will presumably be kept off the post office books and done through the shop till. Cheeky!

I don't mind it at all - I've bought a load of stamps at about 70% value (2 years ago) and I'm still working through them.

I still like posting letters though so they were a good buy for me. :)
