School has closed today round the corner from me, they've given the kids loads of homework to be doing, my niece is not looking forward to that haha!
Just went to check on my son and he is logged on to an online class :)

have you seen that list that outlines who counts as a "keyworker" ? Jesus - it would be quicker to say what jobs aren't included.

we have been trying to find out all day if my husband is a key worker. The very large company that he works for didn’t know, and neither did the Union. Finally found out that he is, so I can continue to work from home (I wouldn’t have been able to do my job and look after a 4 year old - I need lots of concentration).

edited to add I know loads of parents are in this situation that they can’t work if the kids are at home. nightmare.

Word on the street I’m hearing is that schools are closing from Friday and pubs from next Monday..
Sadly almost two for two on this one!

Delayed tax payment to jan 2021 and I THINK we can now apply for universal credit as well

I did this the other day.
Apply via this link: https://www.gov.uk/apply-universal-credit

Or do as I did and get down to your local CAB office quickly and they will talk you through your situation and fill in the online form as you go.

Even if you don't know your situation fully APPLY NOW.

When I was at the CAB we couldn't get through on the phone to make a face to face Jobcentre Plus appointment. I tried for two hours to get through when I got home but no luck.
I tried again at 8am the next day and it took an hour for someone to answer the phone to make an appointment. I have mine on Monday 23rd March. That is quite quick.

When I was at the CAB we did discuss that there would be a lot of people applying for UC now so I strongly suggest that you apply anyway as I predict a huge back log.

Feel free to ask me anything about my recent experience and if I can help I will.

Apply now, apply now, apply now then I cant say I told you so ;)

so my husband is a sole trader - handyman and currently he has a couple of weeks work booked in (as long as they don’t cancel). But it’s more the long term stuff I’m worried about. Hardly any enquiries. I get tax credits already as I’m a stay at home mum but also self employed doing whatever I can I earn a few hundred a month from hubbys business doing admin on a self employed nature. Obviously that’s going to reduce as I’m now home with kids instead of using the time they’re at school to work. If he’s not losing income right now and I’m on tax credits should we wait until shit hits the fan? He doesn’t earn that much tbh hence why we get tax credits. So confused by it all! And when to do stuff!

Hi @hanna.obrien.79 ,

Do what ever you have to do now. Don't wait to see how this all turns out. Get advice from the job centre, the library or like me the Citizens Advice Bureau. Just do it now before everyone else decides to. We are still at the beginning of this virus and jobcentre people will be affected too so staff shortages will delay claims.

The thing I am still learning about UC is that once you are on it you can work too. How much you can earn will depend on your circumbstances. You have a husband and a family, I have a cat ;). Our respective situations are different. I was very surprised at how much I can earn before UC is reduced proportionally and it leaves me in a good situation.

Just do stuff now before the rush.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I forgot to mention one thing about Universal Credit.
This can be a stumbling block for some people.
Virus or no virus, it takes 5 weeks to come through.
This may get l longer if the system is overwhelmed by lots of people claiming.

Yes, if your work dries up and there is nothing or very little coming in you can apply for UC.
Basically you are going on the dole.

My husband just had a call from the union. He is in fact not a key worker. The company he works for have provided him with a letter to say he is a key worker. What a mess! Nobody has a clue what’s going on...

We are on tax credits so I guess it’s better to stay on them than prompt a change to universal credits.

Right and is there a limit I can earn each week before UC gets stopped?

Yes there will be but it will depend on your circumstances.
I should know more about this part of UC after I have had my face to face interview with Jobcentre Plus aka the Dole Office on Monday.
I will of course keep you all posted.

They can’t expect people to turn up for face to face interviews surely in the current climate!

Hi @Rs20033

Sorry to hear about your situation. It must be very frustrating.
It would be best to take advice on UC and tax credits as you may end up better off in some way. If not then you stay as you are but at least you will have some clarity on the benefits situation.

Good luck,
