Hi everyone,

I'm a therapeutic counsellor and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how I could utilise what I do to create a passive income? I'm not sure where I'm going with this to be honest with you but as someone who works for themselves in what we call 'private practice' I don't earn while I'm away on holiday because I'm not seeing clients/patients, so it's got me thinking what I could have "ticking along in the background".

As a therapist, my entrepreneurial skills are pretty much zero, so I was hoping someone might be able to give me an idea of areas I could look into. I thought about "e-books" that I could even sell from my website but I'm not sure I've got the experience (been practicing for 5 years including training hours). I also thought about simple graphics that people could buy like '5 tips to beat anxiety but again I wouldn't know where to start or where to sell these things. I'm not afraid to learn new skills I just don't have a clue where to start and it feels as though whenever I google this sort of thing I go down a rabbit hole and just lose interest.

I guess I'm looking for a way to "harness" my skills digitally. I hope that makes sense and thanks in advance.

So i'd say you are 'on the money' when it comes to ebooks.

People always like 'quick fix' solutions so if they can download a resource from you (as an authority in the sector) they would pay for it.

Beyond then I would suggest looking at running some kind of 'self help' course online that people can buy for £99/£199 a time from you with all the modules being split into bite-size sections that they can go over at their own pace.

I would imagine help with weight loss would be quite an easy sell

Hi Jon,

thanks for getting back to me and thanks for the ideas. That's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for; a nudge in the right direction.

Is there a thread anywhere on hear that might relate to the courses and/or e-books ideas to get me going, that you can think of?

Cheers,

Kieran.

You should be able to find some useful YouTube videos on Ebooks and online course creation.

For the former you could test out Amazon KDP, or sell on your own WordPress site with an e-commerce plugin.

With regards an online course, Udemy and Skillshare have built-in traffic. Or if you can drive your own traffic then Thinkific, Teachable, or similar might be worth looking at.

Another potential avenue is paperback books on Amazon KDP.

Hi rninja,

thank you, those are all great ideas! I'd thought about getting on Youtube but I was afraid I'd get lost down a rabbit hole and I'd be side tracked by something else but perhaps searching for something like 'online course creation' will be a good shout.

I wish my website had the hits to drive traffic but it really doesn't. I revamped the website recently and if anything else, it's gets less hits now but I guess there's no reason why I can't list courses and/or ebooks on there and maybe they might help drive traffic too.

So, when it comes to ebooks and courses, how do you market these things? I like the idea of creating the content and I reckon this sort of thing would "sell" but I'm worried I'd spend hours putting some stuff together and then nobody buys it because they can't find it (or its rubbish lol). It's probably the same problem I have with my website; I think it looks good but I don't get much traffic.

Cheers,

Kieran.

To market Ebooks, if you were selling on Amazon you could create an Author Central page. And fill out your bio, claim your books, and link to your website.

Perhaps Instagram and Pinterest would be suitable for the visual nature of Ebooks.

What are you doing to drive traffic? What SEO are you doing? Are you running a blog to go after relevant keywords? Are you doing paid ads at all to bring in traffic?

You can have the best website in the world but If there is no way for people to discover it apart from literally putting in the name of the site it will never get found!

I discovered sites like Mirthy and Goldster which are aimed at older people. They seem to allow people to organise zoom sessions and be paid for them. When I used to sell books online my best seller was one on how to cut down on alcohol. (I did not write it).

Ok, cheers. I'll have a look at that and give it a go.

I'm not be frank with you, Jon. I've never kept on top of the blogging and I don't do enough on the SEO side of things either. The websites suffered because I get plenty of client referrals through other means, such as client recommendations or through memberships and so I've never really needed to rely on the website for clients but I want to be able to go on holiday without worrying about my income dropping to zero, so if I can get a course or some ebooks on sale, that's the motivation I guess to get traffic driven to my website. I've got loads to learn!

I didn't even know sites like that existed! I run a local bereavement and loneliness group on Friday mornings and that looks like something that could translate to sites like Mirthy and Goldster. Thank you.

Alcohol and addiction are something that clients bring all the time and @Jon mentioned weight loss, which sounds like a great idea too.

I hope this isn't a silly question but when you say you're bestseller was a book you didn't write, what do you mean? We're you able to re-purpose free content for an ebook or something?

You need to treat SEO / Blogging seriously if you want to get users with 'intent' finding you

If you opened a shop on the same road as 8000 other shops all offering therapy and while the other shops had amazing signs or A-boards outside saying what they offered yours was there with nothing (not even posters in the window!) there is no reason for people to choose your services

same applies to your website ;)

Yeah, you're absolutely right, @Jon . I've spent the last couple of days looking at how to create ebooks and courses and quite a bit of time today looking at Amazon KDP and it seems as though half the battle with that is keywords, just like a website. I'm going to have a go at the KDP's first, I think. I'll let you know how I get on.

One more pointer with Amazon kdp books. In Author Central, you can request a custom URL for Amazon.com...could be useful to promote your books on social media or a website/blog.

Cheers @rninja I had it in that I'd like to promote my books on my website or make them available to download, so that's really useful, thank you.

I think I'm now as far as lesson 1. Working out my niche. Obviously, it makes sense to go with a mental health theme and to start with, I think I'm going to go as low to zero content as I can, just to go through the process from start to finish of creating and publishing the book, if nothing else. At the same time, I want to spend a good amount of time getting the key words right. From what I've read so far, it seems as though if you get the right key words, the book will do ok. I'm sure it's more complicated than that though! :giggle:

There are lots of good Keyword tools out there.

You will probably find you gain greater traction (as in a visitor finding your book and ordering it) doubling down on your niche a bit more

so instead of going after
weight loss therapy

perhaps go after
weight loss therapy for over 40s
or
weight loss therapy for mothers

etc.

Hi @Jon

thanks for that.

I watched a video that said as a rough rule of thumb to go with keywords that return less than a 1000 results (I think it also said something like Amzon will say "more than 1000 results found though") and as you point out, this tends to be a longer string of words (long tail key words?).

For anyone else who's doing this, the one thing I've noticed so far is you would be surprised by how popular some niches and how relatively unpopular some are, so I think it's certainly worth doing the keyword research, even if it is very boring!
