Jon,

That seems pretty steep! I tend to go for the annual offers but it hits you usually in the 10th month with an increase so it is all about working out the average cost.

What I did find frustrating with Virgin is that because they are so good, after the initial offer you feel a bit boxed in at a +£40 deal.

Moved house recently and had to settle for Sky or BT due to the area. Went for Sky broadband only (with a deal) then using the existing satellite, from a previous resident, plugged in a Sky+ box I found on gumtree for £5 for standard channels.

I then bought a Chromecast for catch-up tv, youtube, Netflix etc.

I honestly now feel I have a better setup for minimal amount of initial and repeat spend (£18 a month). On top of that I got £75 to spend on pre-paid MasterCard.

ah the old FreeSatFromSky route

I did the exact same thing using one of the standard sky white amstrad boxes for about 2 years so we could have a TV in the bedroom since an Indoor aerial was next to useless in giving us a good signal

Managed to convince the person on the phone on Thurs to let us have VM back a month early.

100mb internet, small tv package, and landline (that we won't use but oh well)
£32 a month :)

Managed to get it all sorted out on Thursday and they came out Saturday morning to install it all again :) yay! I've missed my wifi at home :)

Only thing is.. I got a large mobile package because we had no wifi.
20gb 4g data, 5000 mins, ultd texts for £15 a month, and the unused data rolls over each month.
The first month I had 10gb roll over, so I had 30gb the next month. Then I had 20gb roll over because I only used the rolled over 10. And this month I've only used the rolled over 20 so I have 20gb rolling over again. 40gb 4g internet every month for £15! Defo worth it!

Looking at cheaper mobile deals but I'll save maybe £1 a month for a lotttt less. Might as well stick with this for now :)

Well this threat gave me the kick up the backside I needed and I run VM on Saturday morning and sorted out out prices. We've basically gone down by £3.50 a month but I get a better TV package with BT Sports included + New V6 Tivo Box + broadband goes up to 200meg and i'm only in a 12 month contract instead of a new 18 one so I'm happy with that

Just went through to retention as I know they are the only team you need to speak to who have any clout to make any decent changes to your account

Good discounts on BT mobile deals as well if you're a BT customer. But the bt vision box is terrible! Mine never works properly.

I'm with plusnet for phone and broadband and sky for tv (we don't live in a cable area) PlusNet are brilliant at deal matching, I have been with them since they first came out six or seven years ago and have never felt the need to leave, as soon as my contract ends I shop around a bit and call them to tell them the best deal I can find, they put me on hold for a few minutes to check the deal actually exists and then come back and match it or even better it. Signal is also much better than we had with sky plus you can get referral discounts that never run out, we referred mum about four years ago and have had £1.50 a month off our bill every month since!

Sky are a bit harder, it used to be really easy to just call them and say you wanted a better deal and they would give you it but they seem not to be doing this these days. I was offered a fiver off the price which still left me paying £12 more than last year each month. I bumped into one of the sky guys at a stall in the shopping centre who was trying to get me to join sky, when I told him I fully intended to leave when my contract ran out the next month he told me a secret. if you call up and hand in your notice - you actually go through with handing it in and letting them cut you off for 24 hours you can then get what they call a 'win back' deal from one of those guys in shopping centres or over the phone, the deal is 50% off any package. So we went ahead and handed in our notice and before it had ran out we had a call offering us 30% off, I turned it down and he put me on hold to 'speak to his manager' and then gave me a 30 day rolling contract with 50% off on the win back deal, so if I do find a better deal I am free to switch onto it.

I think this is the case with most services now sadly. Car insurance companies don't seem to give a hoot if you stay or go and I'm sure would rather you didn't even bother ringing up to negotiate with them lol

Oh don't get me started on car insurance!!! During my last year at uni I took out a policy aimed specifically at university students/young professionals (as they put it) told them I would be graduating within the term of the policy which they said was fine. I also bought a new car just about the same time as I graduated. The graduation cost me £150 extra and then new car was £100 more then there was a £25 fee for each change doubling my monthly payments. To make it worse my renewal came through at three times the price and the girl on the phone when I called to say I wasn't renewing told me basically that they didn't want me anymore because I wasn't a student!

Yeah I can relate to that story.

Back in err 2002 maybe I used 'Elephant' to insure my 1998 Ford Fiesta and was a 3rd year student and it cost over £1400 for a year. I was living in Headingley in Leeds at the time which is a VERY student area hence the high premium but man alive I didn't touch any of those 'we aim for the young folk' type insurers again

the irony of the situation for me was that when I was a student nurse I went between university right in the middle of the city centre and my placement. After I graduated I no longer went to the city centre several times a week and got a job next door to my old placement so how the heck did my level of risk not decrease by no longer going to the city and only going to the exact same building that I used to go to for placement and at the exact same times of day?

A letter from TV license came in on Friday telling me its time to do the renewal and I don't use the TV for anything apart of a few games on fifa and the occasional movie on Netflix. I used to be with sky for the sports package, but considering the internet sucked and it was a fortune I decided to end everything and move over to plusnet for the internet which hasn't been to bad. But I still can't believe TV license trying to force us to pay for something we don't even watch BBC...

You need a TV licence if you watch ANY live TV, also, if you want to use the BBC iPlayer. They'll always try and make people pay. If you don't use it for those purposes then don't pay.

Just re-negotiated with BT. Had 12 months to go, signed for 18 months (so 6 extra), £5 discount plus a new home hub and a new TV box.

And the license fee is going up! Only slightly but pain in the bum!
License fee is always going up

It will FOREVER go up!

I guess they don't have something similar in America due to just how many cord cutters there are over there!

Managed to get Virgin media 200mb Plus the new tivo box for £36 a month for 12 months (on a 12 month contract).

For some reason virgin don't do a phone package for the block, so we are 'limited' to just the BB and TV. To have only the BB would be £32 so we are paying £4 a month to be able to record telly. I've not had 'fancy' tv for a long time but we say the same thing every night - "how can there be so many channels but still nothing on?"

If you're trying to get new broadband someone told me (and this may not be true) but use a mobile phone or ring as if you're checking prices and you're connected to your wifi then it can tell who you already use???? A little like deleting your search history when trying to book holiday etc

If anyone is looking to take out sky, last year a friend introduced me to a website called lovedigitaltv.co.uk and they gave me a really good deal which was only valid for 12 months but when I called back this year telling them I was going to leave they extended the price for another year, it may be worth giving them a ring to see what offers they have at the moment.

Just had the dreaded email from virgin media about a £3.50 price increase!!
I know I can now leave in the next 30 days without penalty but the alternative is sky / by open reach with their awful 60meg speeds compared to the 200 meg I get with virgin!

I've recently downgraded from 200mb with virgin to 50 (or 60) with virgin. I'm not sure I'll notice the difference with the kind of stuff I do online.
