Saving for a Mortgage!

Hello, thought I'd start this thread to keep a track of how I'm going saving for a mortgage / deposit for a mortgage (in the area I'm looking (Bristol) and for what I need - 1 bedroom flat I think I'll need between £120,000 and £150,000 and I suspect it'll be higher by the time I can afford the deposit.

I'm not on a low, low salary but low enough that I'll need a really good sized deposit to make this affordable (aiming high and all that).

I'm looking at all kinds of areas and have started matched betting which has been eye opening, found an online service which is very useful (different to the one mentioned here so won't mention the name).

Anyway, this is where I'm currently at:

Current in savings (across several accounts): £9,607.08
Calculated Help to Buy Bonus (if scheme still running when I'm ready): £600
Total (all being well): £10,207.08

Earnings outside of paid employment:
Matched betting (after subscription cost removed): £82.21

Sounds like a great plan [member=6289]ThatJesseBloke[/member]

My sister lives down in Bristol and loves it!

Good to hear you are getting on well with Matched Betting now as well ;)

Don't forget [member=6289]ThatJesseBloke[/member] that you can move your Help to buy Isa to a LISA.

Look into it first but that'll be running for YEARS and you get 25% back on £4,000 a year (so £1,000 a year bonus) I believe.

This is something I'm definitely going to be looking into closer to their launch - I've heard with LISA's that as the bonus is paid yearly the account accumulates interest on the bonus too :)

Hey [member=1]Jon[/member]

I've been dabbling a little with online surveys (I'd forgotten just how long some of them take - though I've discovered I really like Prolific and have completed a few more matched betting offers though haven't got comfortable enough to do more than 1 offer at a time but the balance is growing :) )

Okay, time for a little update :)

Since my last update I've transferred £400 from my current account into one of my savings accounts (I'm currently back living with my parents so easier to transfer more of my income into my savings).

I've also joined quite a few survey sites following [member=920]katykicker[/member] 's brilliant guide - I haven't joined them all yet but I'm quickly finding my favourites and ones I'm not too sure of (currently love OnePoll for it's quick and snappy surveys and i-Say as their screens are nice to look at (yes I get swayed by graphics  ). Thinking about using the Amazon vouchers from i-Say to buy things I normally would from Amazon and then transferring the value from my current account into my savings. I'm also a big fan of Prolific - got accepted for a really interesting diary study on the day I joined - and have had contact with the researchers who were lovely!

Matched betting as I mentioned earlier has continued as before. I've already exceeded my £15 subscription for Feb and this hasn't yet been taken from my account :) Still not quite at the stage of completing multiple offers at once but my Betfair balance is building nicely.

Today I turned on monetisation of my YouTube channel but this is really an experiment and for one video only (my most popular video) so not expecting much (if anything from this)

Anyway here's the totals so far

Current in savings (across several accounts): £10,007.99
Calculated Help to Buy Bonus (if scheme still running when I'm ready): £650
Total (all being well): £10,657.99

Earnings outside of paid employment (most of which hasn't been transferred into my bank yet):
Matched betting (after subscription cost removed): £157.49 (includes £30 cashback via TopCashback)
There is survey income as well but I don't want to include this until it's in my bank account as some of it is in points

Hey @ThatJesseBloke

Just wondering how you have been getting on since turning on monetisation on YouTube as this is an area I am looking at getting into in the coming months?

Hey @ThatJesseBloke

Just wondering how you have been getting on since turning on monetisation on YouTube as this is an area I am looking at getting into in the coming months?

Monetisation on YouTube is interesting - the video I'd monetised has generated $1.26 ($1.23 ad revenue and $0.03 YouTube Red - which is when a monetised video is watched by someone who pays YouTube a monthly payment) which is from a total of 2,118 views).

This matches roughly the average I've heard which is that 10,000 views roughly equates to $10.

YouTube have also recently changed the requirements for monetisation - before videos can be monetised the channel needs to have generated at least 10,000 lifetime views.

Not a lot of money then

Are you thinking about uploading more videos?

Not much money in the monetisation of YouTube videos, I think a lot of people who do it however make a lot of money from affiliate links and their courses etc.

I'll keep uploading as I started the channel more for fun than anything else back last year and the community there is fun to be a part of, (it's main focus is books). :)

Totally agree with this - or if you can make and sell something related to your channel - t-shirts and merchandise is a popular route (and I think this will grow following the recent issue of advertisers pulling out.

Great comment this

The number of 'big' youtubers I see with their own 'brands' of clothing, home items etc available for their readers to buy is getting bigger by the day.

It's not even just on YouTube, Instagram seems to be very popular for people advertising their own branded products and making money from them.

Got to do something to make money. There is hardly any money in YouTube videos now, as everyone I know who vlogs keeps telling me!

Yeah it seems to be a case that if a video isn't a sponsored one and you are just relying on adsense clicks on your videos to earn your fortune you might be waiting quite some time!
