I've been trying out the Job Spotter app during May so thought I'd let you all know how I got on. Apologies for the long post.

This is a nice app. I used the Android version but it's available for iPhone too. A couple of Shedders have mentioned it already. Basically if you spot a job advert in the window of a small business such as a shop, hairdresser, restaurant etc, you simply take a pic of the advert, then a second pic of the front of the premises, upload immediately, and get paid in Amazon gift cards.

The process:
  • Using the app, take a photo of a job advert you've seen in a shop window. You have the option to instantly use your pic if it's nice and clear, or you can discard it and take another
  • The second step is to take a photo of the entire front of the premises, making sure the business name can be read. Again, you can use this pic straightaway or discard it and try again
  • Then hit the submit button while you're still at the premises
  • Your submissions will be approved (or not) sometime within the next few days - sometimes instantly, sometimes it takes longer. The longest I waited was 4 days
  • Each of your successful submissions will be awarded points according to the app's algorithm which I won't go into here. The least points I received was 5 and the most was 102, with varied amounts in between
  • Redeem your points whenever you like in the form of Amazon eGift cards in GBP. I've redeemed once for £11.52 and the code arrived within 24 hrs
Pros:
  • I found it an ultra-slick app to use - probably the best earning app I've come across. Very easy, smooth and fast. I am lucky to have a good 4G signal in my area - I'm not sure how it would cope in an area with poor coverage. Has anybody had any problems uploading?
  • There is no minimum payout - redeem whenever you like
Cons:
  • Submissions get rejected for being "duplicates" if there is more than one upload received for a single location, which sometimes seems unfair. For example, a pub in my high street had three very different jobs advertised in the window (bar staff/floor staff/cleaner), but only one of these was accepted. The other two were rejected outright for being at the same location. At a local independent butchers, the trainee position was accepted, but the full-time experienced role was rejected. This doesn't seem to benefit anybody - jobseekers don't get to see the "rejected" positions, and the spotter doesn't get rewarded for finding unique opportunities
  • The dreaded "not at location" rejection . This one is infuriating! I have taken a photo of the advert at the location. I have taken a second photo of the location. I have uploaded at the location. How can I not be at the location?!! Unless there's some kind of quantum mechanics weirdness going on - perhaps the location only exists when I'm looking at it? Or maybe it only exists in a parallel universe? Anyway - I sulked big time when this happened. The store in question has only been open for a few weeks - but I'm sure it does exist…
My tips:
  • Take the time to have a look through the tutorial on the app and the examples of good and bad submissions. There is also a basic explanation of how the points are allocated, depending on how worthy your submission is deemed to be. Basically you get more points for jobs at independent local businesses that encourage applications in person, and fewer points for generic adverts at branches of national chains
  • Make sure your mobile's location service is switched on
  • If your mobile is automatically connecting to local Wi-Fi hotspots, you might want to switch this function off temporarily. One of my spots wouldn't upload as my mobile had hopped onto the Wi-Fi for the O2 store next door. My upload paused until I switched back to 4G - then it zipped through straightaway. You need to be at the location of the job advert for your upload to be accepted for payment - so you can't wait until you get home, for example
I tend to make a mental note of any adverts I see in my local town while I'm out and about in the week, then I do a sweep of uploads on a Sunday morning when there's nobody around to get in the way.

If anybody has any questions about the Job Spotter app - ask away. I do recommend it as an easy little earner in your spare time. @Jon - maybe you could ask a rep to come on and provide more info?

This looks interesting! Thanks for making me aware of the app. The review and tips are really helpful. I've just downloaded the app and I'm going to start using it tomorrow.
I'll leave a little review once I've played around with it a bit :)

Good luck with it @Toni :)

It's a great way of getting to know your local area - it's amazing how many job opportunities there are out there. It makes you more observant too. Even though I've lived in my town for more than 6 years now, there are a few shops and businesses I didn't really register before - as I normally breeze past them in default daydream mode

That's true!
I'm finding myself being more observant when I'm out and about now. I'm going into the town center today so I'm going to have a try of the app and see how it functions. I'll let you know how it goes and if I have any questions too :)

Interesting and potentially useful. I assume they then either re-advertised them or approach the businesses to find people for them in return of a comission?

Nice informative post...pity ahout the cons.. i worry about apps rejecting for unfair reasons....not your fault... and i am sure apps can get a little cheeky on it... reject but still send client data... nothing to stop them doing that which makes me wary of apps that have high rejection levels. I may give it a try however.. certainly not what i would class a top earning app...out of interest how many submissions (tasks) did you do to accrue that cashout if you dont mind? £11 odds is less than 2 T360 tasks or 3 Roamler tasks...5 mins work... but... every penny counts

@coomassie_blu - I'm happy to bring a rep over here if they want to do that but do you have a contact email address for them at all? Perhaps one that's in the app?

Hello @mabozza - my earliest couple of submissions from the end of April have fallen off my history page now, but I think I sent around 20-ish submissions in total for my £11.52. Bearing in mind it can literally take seconds to do a single "task" (two photos and upload), it probably works out at an overall hourly rate that's better than national living wage. It will never be a big earner, but the Amazon vouchers are a welcome bonus for very little effort. I've only had one "not at location" rejection thankfully - but several "duplicate" rejections for the reasons I mentioned.

What may become an issue is if there is more than one spotter in a geographical area, as one or both of you may end up getting a higher number of "duplicate" rejections.

@Jon maybe I'm dense but I can't work out how to send the email address to you privately rather than list it publicly? Where did the PM function go on your shiny new forum lol

Thanks for that info... that isnt too bad really... i may give it a wee try... pretty crappy the rejection criteria...how are you to know someone else may have submitted one... hard problem to resolve for them to be fair as you arent doing a reserveable task

Its doing well for me in my town. But I suspect that's because no one else around here uses it. When I do spots in the bigger cities it'll give me a lot of duplicates so I tend to save it for when I'm in an area that's not very popular.

Having read @coomassie_blu's excellent description of the app I thought I'd give it a try one day last week while my other usual "earners" were quiet.
I thought my experiences might be useful to someone so:

Firstly I did a little research to try and avoid duplicating other folks submissions. (My city has a few other active "taskers"!) The jobs are uploaded to indeed.co.uk once they are accepted so, go to the website and search by putting Help Wanted in the "what" box and your town or district in the "where" box. If you click advanced search you can select this area only as the default is a 25 mile radius around your location.
All the jobs in the area that have been accepted will appear, the ones you want have Job Spotter X days ago in the description

I made a note of all the ones already listed in the streets I was visiting and set off on a long walk. I found a total of 17 that hadn't already been uploaded and submitted them.
Within 2 days they had all been approved for points varying from 6 to 105, most around the 70 to 80 point mark and I have £9.30 in my "wallet" now to redeem for an Amazon voucher.
A point is worth around 0.7 pence by my reckoning.

You can also earn points for verifying other peoples submissions but you only get 7 points for about 5 mins verifying so that's fairly trivial unless you're bored on the train / bus / throne ;)

I found the most productive areas are those long streets you find in most big towns and suburbs which have lots of restaurants, fast food outlets, convenience stores and service industries like dry cleaners, barbers and hairdressers. I found very few in the main shopping area.

It's not a great rate per hour but if you're out for some exercise or going somewhere on foot it's a nice little earner

Hope this helps someone

With jobspotter does anyone know how long until you can post a job from the same place? I have taken some in the same shop and it says one per location within "a certain time" anyone know what a certain time is?
Thanks!

According to their FAQs any signs you have taken a photo of more than once, within a 30 day period would be flagged as duplicate. I suspect that also applies at the moment to 2 different jobs on the same shop window which is what I think you're asking.
Having said that, I think I've had one or two repeats accepted in less than 30 days so I'm not sure it's a hard and fast rule.
I'm up to £40 now after about 6 weeks using this without too much effort although once you've mopped up your local area the first time it does slow down somewhat

Thanks! Yes I know what you mean about it drying up, I live in a large town and it was great at first but now I think it's been more than 30 days that I took most so I'm good to go around again, woo hoo! Thanks @Mike_S

I have found this website brilliant, have earned about £130 since the beginning of Sepember but I am out and about a lot, often in London so am able to pick up quite a lot of ads.
