How do you get followers on Twitter?

I don't have a blog, so forgive me for posting here, but I thought you might be able to help.

I've recently started working for Mumsnet in Wales and part of the job is to establish a presence on Twitter and Facebook.

The purpose of the page is to promote events and things to do in my part of Wales, ultimately encouraging them to visit the area page on Mumsnet.

The problem is getting people to follow me on twitter so it looks a little busier. I only started on Friday, but I'm impatient and only have 17 follows :(

Should I be doing something with hashtags or links or something? Are there certain people I should be following or should I just wait it out?

Thanks in advance

Just join in with the hashtag chats

engage with people, post funny stuff people will soon notice you. It takes time.

Oh and also run competitions, that's a great way to get followers

The question is, do you just want a load of followers or do do you want followers that will actually engage with your content?

If it's not important about follers activities I'm sure there are apps that can "boost" followers but not sure how they work sorry wifey.
I Google it and see what I can find.

Thank you, both. I shall give those articles a read.

I would prefer to have a plethora of followers who are likely to engage with my content. However, I would also like to boost the numbers a little, even if that means having a few folk who wouldn't necessarily be interested in my posts. I just think my page looks unpopular and could be putting people off liking me back.

I would like some more followers as well, would a thread where we post a link to our twitter account and follow each other be allowed?

I do understand the thing about only attracting followers that will actively engage with our content, but we could help each other start off.

Honestly the best way to get followers organically is just to chat to people

Jump on hashtags, join in the conversations and get chatting!!!

Agree with Jon... and if you search for tweets mentioning your area in wales you might pick up on people talking about visiting your area in wales or commenting on their visit past, present, and future.... better still you might find someone asking a question and that's your opportunity to given them the best answer which should earn you a follow, a like, and maybe a re-tweet leading to more followers.

Running competitions is ok but people might just follow to enter and unfollow later on... tricks you can use to get you some visibility are ok but unless you're giving your new follower the content they want they will unfollow.

I have to keep telling myself it's all about networth.

Heh, most of mine are from back when I was a sex blogger. So now most of them are just sat thinking "why the eff am I still following her" I suspect.

followers are followers, as long as they interact it's win win!
