Is this even possible?

My husband is getting made redundant in a few weeks time. We would like him to become a stay-at-home dad until the youngest child goes to school, but we would need him to earn from home around £1,500 a month, maybe less if I manage to increase my hours at work or find a better job.

We both like our privacy so online blogs, youtube videos etc are out of the question. He does not own a smartphone, so earnings from apps won't be happening either (unless we buy a phone, data package etc just to do the tasks).

We were hoping to start Leapforce but I read on TMS that they don't get back to people, and you need a degree anyway (which he doesn't have) so that seems to be out of the question as well.

So we're left with mystery shopping, surveys, matched betting. Is is even possible to earn so much with such a limited choice?

Over the next few weeks I'm planning to go in detail through most of the threads on TMS but just now I feel I need some encouragement that it can be done. I am sure I will become more optimistic once I've had the chance to think through all the options, but just now thinking about the future is extremely stressful. So please send me some positive comments to cheer me up.

Thanks.

Like most of the people would suggest you is start MB. It does will bring you couple hundred pounds without much effort just need to be very careful read the T&C's.

if your target is at £1500, you can simply ignore Survey (regarding you don't like share privacy, also can say goodbye to all the super valuable survey)

Lionbridge/Leapforce/Appen, require put fair amount of time to study for sure. I don't like it much, because it is VERY boring..... and there is no skills but still need keep study.

uTest need have quite amount of smartphone and computer or even game console to get more chance to participate with more project. There is project for computer, however normally are very limited and many people join, there is less chance to get paid bug to find.

I would suggest you start with MB but try to do different things as well. Don't Target at £1500 at beginning but give 3-6 month to get the target more stable.

I have two young children, without my earning, my husband would able to afford our living. I simply want to bring more money. I mostly have night time, I did first month MB with most of the sign up offer with around £300+ than start with uTest(test software and write bug report), lionbridge, appen. I still comes back with MB sometime but it holds a lot of my cash so I still building my bank up.

Oh, by the way, if you do have ambition to start a business, research on drop-shipping business or amazon FBA. But as it is a business, it will require a lot of time at beginning and some investment to put into the business. Successful online business could bring more than 100k per year. So, if it fits you, take into your consideration.

Honestly, no. I don't think it is. You do need a few more irons in the fire than that to hit £1500 consistently.

The good news is, I am pretty sure leepforce et al do not require a degree, at least for some jobs. Check it out fully because i am sure there would be something there for you.

I'm getting a lot of emails from the website testing companies. They pay quite well so should be worth signing up for too. Add all that up and it will start to get close to your target. You would still need to be looking for other opportunities too though,

I would say buy a smartphone to do the apps. Normally it is worth the outlay but you would need to consider if you would be able to actually get out and do the tasks if you have chidlren at home to look after too.

The trick is, I think, to find at least one consistent steady income stream and fit everything else around that. Otherwise one can feel like a squirrel, flirting around a garden picking up one acorn from here, a berry from there. etc......

Hey up @sillymoo

Ok so £1500 is the target.

As @homie says, buy a smartphone so you can do work for BeMyEye, Roamler etc. Otherwise you are just turning down money you could potentially be earning.

Matched Betting - obvs - That's just money for nothing and thousands at that!

I believe you could do a blog without privacy being an issue. You don't have to have your face all over your blog, heck I sure as hell don't lol

Apply for Leapforce etc. Yes it's not easy to get in but the hard work is worth it for the money you can earn from it long term! I got 2.5years out of Leapforce!!

What about eBay reselling?

There are loads of ways to make money online. You could build up to £1500 but it wont happen overnight.

Does he have any writing talent? There are plenty of ways to make money through writing without giving up your privacy or blogging. I use iWriter and Textbroker a lot. Generally make £40-50 a month with these but I put very minimal effort in as I work full time as well. I know of others who earn over £1000 through freelancing and most of it is totally anonymous.

Usertesting and What Users Do. Website testing, you need a decent laptop/PC and a decent set of headphones with a mic (I got gaming ones off amazon for less than £15 and they're more than adequate). I get £50 - 60 a month from these but again only do a fraction of the tests that come through to my emails. Could bring in over £100 with this.

Apps. There are so many apps out there that can make you money it really would be silly not to invest in a smartphone. It could easily pay for itself in a month. So far this month I've already made well over £100 and I think I can get over £200 by the end of it!

I definitely recommend matched betting too. I've built up slowly but I've made well over £2000 since 30th Dec when I started.

Another money maker from home is audio typing. The easiest one to get accepted on is probably crowdsurf but the pay is pretty low. I would recommend trying take not, rev.com or transcribe me. They all pay much better. Take Note are English too so no need to worry about American spellings! This could bring £200-300

If you’re considering doing traditional mystery shopping (none task app based) you’ll still need a mobile phone to take pictures of the shops. I’d definitely therefore recommend getting a smartphone with at least 16gb of memory (preferably 32gb) and as a minimum an 8 megapixel camera on it. You can get one off eBay and then sign up to a cheap high data tariff (three so some good sim only deals). I’m terns of earnings my smartphone brings in £300 a month minimum so it’s worth investing. I spent £100 on my phone and £13 a month on the contract so it paid for itself in the first couple of weeks of using it!

Completely agree with @Andrew here

You will pay off the cost of the phone in no time and then be in endless profit ;)

At first I don't think you can. Matched betting will help if you are in a position to dive in. I would not write all surveys off as there could be sites where you are an ideal candidate.

Very true. I still look back with fondness on the month of January when my phone earned me over a £1000! Could have doubled it if I wasn’t working full time as well so with hard work and perseverance anything is possible!

True that. Sometimes its quiet then suddenly a set of tasks come up that no one else seems to take and the fee goes up. Last year there were loads of building site jobs in london on BME. I think they ended up at £10 each for just a few photos and some multiple choice questions. I got out on my bike and did 10 in one day and the same the next. £200 for two days work.

Others on here do even better. Mabooza has a home in Beverly Hills and a private Lear jet all paid for by phone tasking apps. (although this may possibly be an exaggeration)

This is a very interesting thread.

Yesterday, I had a free day so I hammered a load of tasks in my area. I'd been away for the night and so completed tasks to and from where I had been.

StreetSpotr - completed 20 tasks = £80
Roamler - completed 4 tasks (and one that I couldn't complete but still got £2) = £18
Grass roots Mystery Shop = £10

There were more I could have done but I got bored and wanted to get home. Just about £100 for a day's work, not bad, although obviously you won't do this every day (or even every week).

You won't make a fortune from mystery shopping alone, but combined with user testing / surveys etc you'll make a bit each month.

For long term money making potential, I suspect matched betting and a blog is the way to go. Perseverance and dedication are the keys.

Many thanks for all your replies, they were very useful.

I had no idea a smartphone could bring that much income. Do you think it depends on where you're based? We're in Scotland, surely there won't be quite so many jobs here as there are down in London?

Re Leapforce/Appen/Lionbridge - which one would you recommend to start with? I believe you're not allowed to be registered for more than one, or am I wrong? I saw that Lionbridge does Maps and Internet Assessor jobs. Could he apply for both?

I've never heard about website testing companies, which ones would you recommend?

Audio typing sounds good too so I'll put it on my list of things to explore.

Sadly no writing talent but maybe I could look into this for myself. What do IWriter and Textbroker do? Is it hard?

We already do matched betting but I am ashamed to say we don't make very much out of it as we've only been putting in an hour or two every Saturday morning. It's been mainly me doing it but husband will take over when he stops working and will be able to do some during the week as well.

I'd ask @mabozza about app based work in Scotland. I'm sure he'll see this and give you the lowdown.

In terms of website testing there's the following:

1. Whatusersdo
2. Usertesting.com
3. Intellizoom
4. Usability hub

There's also utest but it requires a bit more confidence and proficiency than the other sites do. So I always recommend doing some tests with usertesting.com and whatusers do first. I've written some more about it here:

My phone makes me loads. Worth every penny. I've just made £3 through it while sat in the bath (curious cat, QMEE and slice the pie). I have about 20 apps on it and whilst not all pay well those pennies all add up.

Lionbridge have the quickest reply for work but the exams are hard! Appen are also recruiting st the moment for social media work.

@Andrew has already covered the website testing companies I was going to list. Today I've done two tests for UserTesting and one for What users do. They took less than an hour for all three and have made me about £19-20. For the time they take they pay well.

Audio typing can be boring but it pays. Crowd surf is the easiest test to pass followed by Take Note. Each company has different good and bad points. If you can commit to two 4-6 hour shifts a week and manage well with a time limit then definitely go for Take Note as the pay is way better.

IWriter allows you to apply for jobs. You start in a low level so only earn £1.50ish per article but none of them take too long to write. If you can write none of the freelance sites are difficult to use but it is a competitive market so you need to either be really quick or really good to land the better jobs. For this reason I stick to the lower paid ones knowing I'm more likely to get them!

Thanks. We'll start looking at phones. Presumably iPhone so we can also use Task360. Would Iphone 5 work or do we need to go for 6? Or go for a cheaper phone and forget about Task360? We will get a redundancy payout so could invest a bit of that in a phone, not a crazy amount though.

What kind of jobs come up on iWriter? Could you give me a few examples of topics please? @maisiemog

Again, thanks for all the answers.

Task360 is no more I'm afraid. They have moved over all the tasks (and most of the staff!) to BeMyEye so if you want to get an Android phone to the best of my knowledge you won't be missing out on any money earning opportunities

Pretty much everything comes up on iWriter. Writing website blurb for almost every business imaginable, blog posts on almost every topic out there etc. If it can be written about it's probably been requested at some point!
