Hi all,

As a lot of the opportunities posted on this site are open to / aimed at the self employed, I thought I’d ask:

Is anyone here a member of IPSE (Association of Independent Professionals and Self Employed)?

And if so, would you recommend their membership to others?

They seem to be a proactive organisation in terms of campaigning for the self employed / freelancers, and providing them with resources such as webinars, networking gatherings, tax and legal helplines, life assurance cover, etc.

Their website is at: https://www.ipse.co.uk

I’m just umming and aahing because their membership doesn’t come cheap (the more basic level costs over £200 per year.

Many thanks.

Can't say I've ever heard of them but their membership cost is eyewatering!

also if you join now I'm not sure it would help much if you have coronavirus issues
CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) For any Plus member who joins on or after 16 March 2020, or any Standard member who upgrades to Plus membership on or after 16 March 2020, please note that we are unable to cover any claim for any loss that is caused by or arises in any way from Coronavirus (COVID-19), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a mutation or variation of SARS-CoV-2 or a threat, fear or likelihood of infection with any of the above. Anyone who is a valid Plus member as at 15 March 2020 will be covered as normal.

I'm not entirely sure what a blogger / freelance writer (who might join the NUJ union anyway) would get £300 of value out of joining this

What's your thinking? Do you think it's good value for money?

I feel like there should be a lower cost membership for people who earn less from self employment. £200 - £300 a year is presumably alright if you’re some sort of freelance consultant who can charge that amount for a day’s work. But if it takes you say a week or a month to earn that, then it is much harder to justify.

Surprised me that a quick search of this site didn’t throw up their name beforehand, which maybe tells something about how relevant or well known they are.
