I have friends who are paramedics and they are starting to take people to hospital again. Some of them are saying they cannot go through what they went through earlier in the year.

A colleague took his daughter to start university (not the one we work at) and he said it was a shambles. None of the students or parents were wearing masks. There was hardly any social distancing, and staff were taking people's phones, passports etc straight off them to check their details while leaning in close with no masks or visors. As soon as freshers' flu kicks in the whole thing will collapse.

There is absolutely no joined up thinking going into this.

Leeds escapes again

We have some further detail for those in the Midlands and in West Yorkshire.

In Wolverhampton and Oadby and Wigston, residents will be banned from socialising with other people outside of their own households or support bubble in private homes and gardens from Tuesday.

All parts of Bradford, Kirklees and Calderdale will also be subject to this restriction from Tuesday. Some wards in these areas had been exempt from restrictions on gatherings introduced at the start of August, but these wards will now also be subject to the ban, the UK government says.

Those who are shielding in Leicester City will no longer need to from 5 October.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock says: “I know these restrictions will make everyday life harder for many, but I know that residents will work together and respect the rules so we can reduce rates of transmission."

I'm surprised London is doing so well considering the number of people that live and work there.

@Jon Have you definitely ruled out a rescue dog?

I missed the Sturgeons press conference today. A) as I was busy and B) all this talk of lockdown is making me feel really anxious. Apparently she gave everyone a big slap on the wrist and told us she would take away our treats if we don’t behave ourselves. Fed. Up.

Also talk of another 2 week lockdown. Waste of time if schools, work and universities continue. As for London, so many people in the City working from home that the city itself is pretty much empty according to my family down there.

I think this is very University dependent.

I work at a big London University and everything has actually been going very well.

As a stat for anyone interested, 65% of our new starters said they wants to study on campus.

We have put together loads of things to ensure that social distancing can take place. As one example, I won't be back nsite until 2021 so our office area can be used.

How do you know that things are going very well if you aren’t on site? At the university I work at they have been making all sorts of claims for months. Academic staff only have to be onsite when they need face-to-face contact with students. Senior management and admin staff are on rotas. However, technical staff like myself returned to work full time on 1st September. I was horrified at how little had been done to make the place Covid secure and have been working to get these things in place. Students return on Monday and still it’s not complete. And academic staff have had a nice 6 month holiday and planned absolutely sod all.

Because communication? Not from senior management as I., much like yourself, take all that with a grain of salt. But I have friends/colleagues that have been part of welcoming teams and have been part of the process of setting up the labs and teaching spaces for social distancing. I have seen a huge amount of pictures (again, from friends, not senior management "Ohh look at what we have done").

Also, our academic staff have certainly not been sat idle - the amount of emails/tickets I get daily about COVID related implementations is crazy.

I have been on site a few times, but back in July which is not representative.

I will 100% concede that it could all be nothing and that students will turn up and ignore it, but what I am saying is that from my perspective I am going into the start of the academic term with hope.

As a side note, it would be very funny if we were talking about the same place :).

So, people are allowed to go to work, but what if they have a young child, for example. If a family member normally looks after them, but households aren't allowed to mix, what happens there? Do they obey the rules and the parent can't go to work, so can't pay their mortgage, or do they look after the child and maybe get fined? It really hasn't been thought through. It's half arsed and won't work.
