"Britain could vaccinate its way out of lockdown by April 7th"

Is this supposed to be good news? That's another 2 months.

The R rate is already below 1 in lots of places, I thought the plan was to start coming out of lockdown once all the oldies had been vaccinated mid february. Or are they going to ramp up the fear again with the Mutant ninja South African strain and take us right back to the beginning once more.

If only! They seem to be moving the goalposts now to getting things back to normal in May as the experts would rather go longer in this lockdown than risk the new variants causing trouble with the vaccine. They also want to be taking it extra slowly so there won’t need to be anymore lockdowns after this one.
So lets see what actually happens!
This lockdown is definitely getting stretched longer and longer every time there is an update.

Yeah totally agree

They will know there is ZERO chance of letting us out of lockdown and then asking us all to do it again in April etc.

So better to keep us at home

It's going to be a bloody struggle, but I can honestly see the kids not going back until after Easter, and the shops not opening until May to make sure that we don't blow it by getting the balance of low community transmission/vaccines and opportunistic new variants wrong.

Fewer handouts to Tory donors to provide 'services' (I'm looking at YOU, Test and Trace...) and more one-off grants to people who can't otherwise afford to isolate will help us out of this even faster.

do we think they will hit this goal then?
I think they will, if only because the government has absolutely bugger-all to do with it and it's all down to people who actually Know How Logistics Work.

Snow might slow us down a bit, but I reckon they'll only miss it by a week or so if that's the case.

I feel this is an example of careless talk costing lives at the moment

I don't dispute the result, I dispute its relevance, given the the original and b.1.1.7 variants are the ones in mass circulation and not SA. ONS estimate that 800,000 people have covid that are not the SA variant and currently, less than 200 of the SA one.

I don't think it was their intention to have this released at all. This is like the ineffective in over 65s drama all over again - some dumbass in government reads provisional data and leaps on it. Then the press leap on it as they've felt dirty for having to write such positive stories about the UK for a while.

I'm inclined to agree.

And even if it *was* in wider circulation in the UK, 20% protection against all disease, and (seemingly) around 65% protection from severe disease is better than a kick in the hoop.

They must be ahead of schedule in Bristol as I have been invited to book an appointment for a jab. Our postcode has also been invited for a surge test for the Kent variant which us a bit worrying. It has never come up in the free postcode lottery before.

Well my parents have had their jabs!

I wonder at what point the NHS will turn this over to say supermarkets and chemists to do the majority of the work? I would guess after march/april once the 9 priority groups have all been done
