Please can anybody give me some advice in simple terms?
I am a tutor (self employed) and would like to put 5% of my earnings into a fund to pay for free tuition. At the moment, I am just doing this through freebies but am now looking to expand the business by adding other tutors.
As I would like to add this onto my website when people look, how would I word this? Can I just transfer 5% into a separate fund or do I have to set up a charity? Setting up a charity looks too complicated and there are too many at the moment. Equally, am I open to criticism if I say that 5% goes into my learning fund.
Please can somebody help. I am so.vonfused.

Certainly above my pay grade I'm afraid. Charity status may bring some tax advantages but I don't know. Still, I like the sound of what you are doing. Do you have an accountant already? They might be able to help point you in the right direction.

With regard to wording on your website. Something like "5% of all tuition fees goes directly to fund free tuition for disadvantaged children in the local area"

Thing is, now I've typed that and seen it in print, would some people feel like they are being forced to donate 5% for other kids to get free tuition and resent it?

Maybe calculate it as a percentage of your profits and say "X amount of our profits are used for providing free tuition for disadvantaged children in the local area" then it sounds more like its coming from your own pocket, rather than you are bumping the price up so you can teach other kids for free. Maybe don't even mention percentages or the word profit at all. Just detail the charitable work you are doing. Dunno. Just thinking out loud really.

I was thinking like you. I don't want parents to feel that they are being forced to pay for something. I might have to have a real think about this. Thank you.
