2nd to favourite and loose by a length offers

These offers seem to be promoted every day by some book makers. If your horse looses under the conditions prescribed you get your money back as a free bet. These are usually your horse has to finish 2nd to the starting price favourite or if your horse looses by a length or less.

Is there a recommended strategy to take advantage of these or are they not worth bothering with? I can see there being too many opportunities to loose out on the free bet but haven't checked them out fully yet.
