so.. True story

A while ago I did a live internet Q&A with a Multimillionaire called Scott Jones (http://www.scottajones.com/past/bio/) - I posted a question to him

'I have £50 to spend on advertising my Internet venture, where should I spent that money to get maximum exposure?'

his reply was to not spend ANY of that £50 on advertising and instead spend time upping your social media profile and connecting with others via that. Is this modern world we live in now we can advertise to potential users for free where it used to cost money to advertise to them in the local rag.

The Money Shed has gained A LOT of users via Social Media but for those of you who do Blogs or other Internet ventures and are trying to earn money from it. Where do you get most of your audience from (Google aside)?

Bing/yahoo, Pinterest (very popular atm). Squidoo is still supposed to be an ok way to get a few back links and traffic to your site provided you don't overdo it and stick to normal niche products rather than making money, diets, exercise, pills etc.
The money shed ;)

Oh, and G+ activity is supposed to help your google ranking for obvious reasons.

I remember Squidoo and ciao being all the rage a few years ago. Maybe that isn't the case so much anymore.

In all honestly with social media it is VERY hard to know where to lay your hat. I have more success with Twitter than with Facebook. Others find it the other way around.

Twitter I find (especially using tweetdeck) I can capture people who are talking about things or using keywords I am interested in and then Follow > Connect > Introduce to this site. It doesn't always work and sometimes it even works in the opposite direction. I become aware of an opportunity for earning money via Twitter and I will post about it on here so it pays dividends. With Facebook, apart from getting more Likes for the page and I imagine helping with Google ranking in some way I am yet to see a big gain from it.

Communication via Twitter is just SO quick and to a degree personal that It wins out for me every time.

If I was trying to get people to read my blog and expose them to my ads, that is definitely the way I would go

People were abusing Squidoo and so they clamped down very hard. These article directories type places are not as important as they were and I wouldn't put unique content on them - it's better off on your own site, but a couple of sensible articles is fine I think.

I am probably not making the most of twitter. I much prefer it to FB for the same reasons as you. Not sure I even know what tweetdeck is. I have 614 followers of KSF but getting retweets is quite hard. Getting retweeted by people with lots of relevant followers is very important I think, but lots of people are only happy to favourite instead - a pointless exercise if ever I saw one! I find it hard to choose hashtags sometimes and end up just using the same ones all the time.

I might have to do a not more research on maximising twitter. There is lots of training at WA on maximising the benefits of social media that I have rather skimmed over as I find it a bit of a drag.

Oh, and let's not forget Youtube. If you can get that right, it's a great way to get traffic. I have done a couple of screencasts to music, but really need to get braver on that front and stick my voice on them.

Wow - that's a hidden gem! I feel a youtube "how to" video is required though. Too many flashing lights to work out for myself.

Tweetdeck is awesome! I have been using it for several months now. Give it 10 minutes and you'll feel like it was always there :D

Though if you have many profiles you can sometimes reply/tweet from the wrong one ;D ::)

Facebook is definitely my number 2 after the search engines, it accounts for about 8% of my Youtube and website traffic.
Strangely, despite my success on You tube is actually only drives less than 1% of traffic to my website.
Pinterest is about 1% and twitter doesn't work for me, I guess I don't have the patience to spend enough time on it!
Running competitions I've found drives a fair amount of traffic, which reminds me I must get round to doing another!

I like the look of scheduled tweets. Tweeting at the right time of day makes a big difference. I think 7am is a good time when people are checking social media before or on way to work and also 7pm when they are back home. If your visitors are from other time zones, scheduling would be great.

Twitter has a pretty poor conversion rate. Lots of people just clicking any old links because they're bored or just a bit curious. Facebook probably works better for sites that are less product sales based. I will get around to doing a fan page for ksf soon though. I often have to delete tweets sent from wrong account. I have been known to retweet my own tweets too!

RSS feeds using free Feedburner account is another option. I only have 1 subscriber so far but I think people are far more likely to read an email than tweet or FB post since it won't get lost in amongst other posts.

Perhaps the YouTube works best if you have aff links embedded in them or in description rather than directing traffic to site.

I actually embed other people's videos into some of my product reviews - many don't realise that the t and Cs allow this. It's a great way to improve your reviews without having to buy the product yourself. If you can gather all of the information from all over the internet into a single post, there is no need for customer to go elsewhere for more reviews. Preventing "YouTube leak" is important. If they've already seen YouTube vids on your website, less likely to go hunting for more there.

I would run more comps if I could guarantee that while it might create an influx of users to this site, it would create 'sticky' users which is what I'm after.

I always think it is important to remember what you goal aim is if you are going to sink money into running a competition.

I have been thinking about comps today

The first comp the money shed did bought in lots of compers who joined up but sadly do not stick around

The second comp bought new members but looking back at it was far too complicated for a comp to be effective

So...

I am going to trying something different

Going to combine rafflecopter + twitter and work on upping the twitter audience and see if that can be used to bring more people here as they get exposed to TMS

I was one of your original punters from that competition Jon :)

I'm not a true comper, but was browsing that thread on the green site checking I had the right answer for a Deal Or No Deal comp that was running at the time. Didn't the green site take your post down quite quickly for no apparent reason? If I remember rightly, you had a requirement for us to post something for entry into your competition. Aren't there still two or three of us contributing from those earliest days?

I'll always be grateful for finding The Money Shed - my online earning journey (such as it is...so far) began here. Maybe I wouldn't have found you without that original competition?

Good luck with your plans

Aye quite a few of you from the start found this site by the original comp before the green site took it down as self promotion

I think with comping I am still finding my feet and trying to work out what works and what doesn't vs how much money I give away (the last comp was £50 In prize fund!)

Just on this sort of topic

has anyone had any experience with using Google Adsense to drive traffic to their site/blog/forum/whatever

If so what was the success vs how much you had to payout
