We all know that getting your website on page 1 of the Google search results is very important, but it is hard to truly appreciate the full extent of its importance until you see it for yourself, and can actually see the stats behind the scenes when it happens.

I agree. There are always risk when Google decides to change its algorithms. My strategy is to follow the Google tend which is favoring larger authority sites rather than the very small niche ones that rely on only a couple of products. It is also important not to neglect Bing/Yahoo so that you are effectively hedging against the future wroth of Google.
