Hi @katmonkey. I don't think there's a best way. I suspect most proofreaders have various ways in which they got into it. Mine was mainly via a few proofreading jobs I found on Craigslist some years ago. I don't have a proofreading qualification or what would be considered a relevant degree.

Update:

My laptop stopped charging on Friday, so had to take it to a computer shop. It's been fixed. Picked it up today.

The gift in this is that the lack of a laptop forced me to use my mobile phone to proofread online. I've used my mobile for this on occasion, but not as much as I did while I was without a laptop.

It wasn't ideal (small screen/keypad), but it was doable. My online income therefore didn't take as much of a hit. I mean, I didn't make as much as I could have with my laptop at my disposal, but I didn't lose as much as I could have without it.

I also received some money from Neevo (task-based site) for work I did a while ago.


All in all, my current total stands at £180.68:

Proofreading - £160.27 (previous: £134.08)
Neevo - £20.41 (prev: £2.21)

Total: £180.68/£500 (prev: £136.29/£500)

My total's gone up to £237.30, so an extra £56.62 made (from proofreading).

I'm expecting one or two MTurk payments by the end of the month. Also haven't included the £125 or so I'll be getting from customer support work.

Really putting my head down this week. Want to end the month close to £550 and possibly more. Don't really want to place a limit on it. Work hard, make as much as I can.

I've been doing somewhat better on MTurk since last month. There were also batches of tasks I did last month that have recently been getting approved, so good times. / MTurk can be unpredictable, so I don't know what my earnings there will be like next month, or from month to month, but I'm pleased with how things have been going. / I hope I get one or two more payments before the month's out. Just depends on whether some of my tasks get approved and when.

Update:

Some money came through - £16.88 - for the Neevo work I've been doing. Didn't expect that as when they pay can really vary, so I'm pleased with that.

Made an extra £10.92 from proofreading as well.

My new total's £159.32, so an extra £73.99 made since my last post. That came from the normal proofreading I do, plus a few proofreading orders from a new private client.

Some of the tasks I did on MTurk about a month ago are getting approved, so I have about £20 there.

I'm also expecting about £250 from customer support work this month.

I'm about £70 away from my £500 target, but I'd like to make £600 (or more if I can).

I've broken things down to how much I want to make each day to reach my target. That will help me stay focused. I'll just focus on each day and the end of the month will take care of itself.
