Am I at a disadvantage earning online because I am a Man?

I understand what you're saying - you don't like the concept and you would most likely disagree with court decisions that have gone in its favour. And you're absolutely entitled to that opinion. In most cases I probably wouldn't disagree with you either. However, there are times when I'm at ease with the concept. Eg: company advertises job, two people apply, both equally qualified, but company has no male workers. To address this imbalance, the man would get the job. Now, of course, that's a different situation to the one Jon raised regarding Mumpower and as I initially said, I don't think he's wrong. I do think Parentpower would work just as well. Or indeed Massivelytalentedfolkwithorwithoutchildrenpower. Catchy.

Yeah, there are obvious exceptions - like with focus groups. If they want a variety of opinions, and they've got loads of females to choose from, it makes sense that they'd prefer to ask a few more males when given the opportunity.

Parent Power sounds much better, and makes more sense really!

I think this issue (not problem!) goes outside of Mumpower though

Even though I don't even agree with Franchise opportunities such as freedom living etc. target women over men 10 times over when it comes to recruiting.

If I setup penisworker and recruited Men for online earning opportunities and completely excluded women it would not go down well. So why do you think it is more acceptable now for companies like that to exist. I have seen the most sexist stuff ever from Mum Bloggers on Twitter and on netmums and the like.

Even those crazy 'sign up to this franchise, my imaginary boss just bought a new Audi!' posts on Facebook ALL seem to target mum groups on Facebook.

Why that demographic? Why exposes these opportunities (real or not) only to that sex.

Definitely.

To be fair to Mumpower, I'm sure there are loads of other companies I could list, but they're the one I was looking at the other day so they've had the brunt of my irritation. ;D

I wonder whether it's a case of women helping other women? Perhaps a fear that men will "take over" the work at home jobs? I do think there are more men looking to earn money from home these days - perhaps some of the female bloggers have noticed this and aren't too happy about it?

I suppose it's because the reality remains that there are more women than men working from home, partly because more mums than dads are at home with the children (whether by choice or necessity). So it's easier/more lucrative for companies to target a large market that is already there. Of course, this approach then perpetuates the problem/issue.

And for what it's worth, I'm not sure Vaginaworker would be too well accepted either (though there's probably certain places on the internet that would disagree)!

I think it is because we still are by and large a society where in many families Dad goes out to work full time, and Mum is either at home or working part time. Therefore Mums are much more likely to be on the look out for extra cash. People who work full time are unlikely to want to go out flogging candles or juice in the evenings.

In my line of work - writing - there are just as many blokes as there are women.

Maybe women are missing out on a huge untapped recruitment. They should stop trying to recruit for their franchises at baby groups and should instead hang around the local pub and car garage lol

Ahh, I'm going to come across wrong here but I think sex discrimination is totally different (and much 'better') than race discrimination.

It's not discrimination to say that women bear children and then, quite obviously (to me) want to stay at home and raise them. That's innate? I am quite ambitious (or I was pre-children) but my husband has a job where he works away from home and sleeps in his lorry from Monday to Friday and I just couldn't do that. I don't think I could do a job where I was jetting off to sunny climes for lengths of time, etc. I wouldn't expect most mums to do that either, but dads, sorry but yes, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

How far that transfers to these kinds of opportunities, though, I don't know. If a man stayed at home baking and selling cupcakes, and blogging about them, I'm pretty sure he'd be well accepted. It would be unusual though, but I don't think it's gender discrimination.

The mumpower does sound like discrimination. I would apply for penispower though, Jon. Just because it would be so cool to work for a company with such a name.
