Why does the income have to be passive?

Why can't it involve some kind of manual online work at your end?

You are limiting yourself (and what you can earn) by just going after a passive income

I think the Rev is right, the only real passive income is invested income whether via dividends or interest but you have to have surplus income to put away, this is the idea behind the FIRE movement. The only other thing I have heard of is niche websites which people have created and monetised. Of course, this requires initial input and expertise in a niche area or hobby.
