Anyone else find selling on eBay an absolute chore?

I've been selling a few I suppose what you would call high-value items recently (£100+) and I put them on ebay for a 7 days auction and then get endless stupid questions or people asking me to cut the price down to a ridiculous level and so I more often than not end up just listing the thing on Gumtree at the same time so make life easier

With Gumtree there are no fees, the person just comes to your house to pick it up so there isn't any delivery and the whole thing is just a LOT smoother.

With eBay, I feel I am being nickeled and dimed with everything I put on there that actually sells!!

Completely agree with you, Jon! Although Gumtree can equally be a pain with the amount of questions and potential timewasters, it's nice to be able to have someone collect an item and it's done and dusted :)

Aye, just sold a TV. Put it on at half 11 and it's being collected in the next 30mins!

Job done!!

I mostly do buy it nows and its not too bad.. They took off the 7 day buy it now last year or something which I think made it harder for buy it now but seems okay.
Some of the features such as international selling and having postage paid for work well.

I feel on eBay as though “make an offer” is more popular than buy it now!

I never use make an offer either, although that still doesn't stop the clowns that send a message asking if I'll take half the selling price. I don't engage with them. Sometimes things take a few weeks to sell, sometimes a few months but I always get the full asking price.

I have a blog post about protecting your seller account on eBay

there are two very useful sections.

1) Bidder Management
2) Blocked Bidder List

make sure you use these to your advantage as it stops a lot of the 'chancers'.

I would say feedback is maybe one of the downsides of say selling on Gumtree or Facebook marketplace as it's just not as rigid HOWEVER if people are turning up at your house to pickup a laptop or whatever I feel they are probably less likely to pull a fast one and claim it's broken as you can show them the thing working before they leave!

Anyone collecting in person pays cash.

I also security mark all my items to make sure that no-one does the old 'switcheroo'.

I've tried selling via FB once. I pair of wellies. Someone wanted them and agreed a price and asked to meet in town at a time. I went and waited an hour for them to turn up. They didn't. I put them on eBay and they went for 4 times the price on a £1 max fees deal.

I blocked the fb buyer and vowed to never sell on facebook again.

I think this could be the saddest reselling story I've ever read!

I know I made it worse for myself by only messaging them once to say I was there. but my feeling was I didn't need to chase. They'd either turn up or not. They didn't. I sold elsewhere for more money. Which was nice.

Jon, I kind of agree, I took time off from eBay and only got back. I found with the extended user base, you have more chance to sell an item and I tried FB too (also sell regularly on Vinted). It a lot depends on your area and I find some stranger turning up at my house a bit daunting as a woman living alone.

I never tried Gumtree but Shpock offers a similar experience I think and I didn't like it as much.

Hi @asajj

How have you found Vinted? I've seen it advertised on TV but it says there is no cost to sellers - how is it making money?

@The Reverend I've been using it for around 6 years now and no seller fee but they make money by charging buyers for the transaction. You can also pay to promote your wardrobe or "up" an individual item to be more visible as a seller.

Things I like about Vinted:

- No auction, "buy it" now only feature. You list your item and it stays there unless you take it down.
- No seller fee
- Easy to use app/website
- Good options for payments (credit card, PayPal)
- You can offer bundle discounts
- Buyers can send you offers for you to consider

Things I don't like about Vinted:

- Mostly used by young women. Obviously, this isn't the issue itself. They dressed younger than I do so unless I have something from a trendy brand like Topshop, it might not always the best place to sell.
- Sometimes you receive ridiculous offers too, people try to save 10p
- It is only for clothes, cosmetics and shoes

I usually list my stuff both on Vinted and eBay and see which one sells first, hope this helps!
