Hey guys,

So.... anyone making money from YouTube? Care to share how much?

I'm in the process of trying to upload videos in various niches from the idea where people have said you can "Make money on Youtube without showing your face".
Using Creative Commons pics, vids but with my voice over.

Wondering whether I'm wasting my time?!, but can also see the mechanics of how other small sites are successfully doing it.

I realize some of the money makers are really based on the idea of selling, "How to make money...." and selling courses on how to do this.
I know there are plenty of other ways than the YouTube partner program - affiliate links etc.
Competition is the other factor - is this where low competition keywords and SEO come in?

Just would love to hear from anyone who's making even a little that could share their thoughts.

Cheers

Nate

What are the ways of making money online that you are promoting? Do they learn towards benefitting from you covering them in video format instead of say just a blog post and then funnelling your affiliate links into that.

I've edited in case there was any misunderstanding - I'm not promoting " Making money online". It's various niches - Pets, Health etc.
It's just on YouTube at the moment, with the idea of adding affil links, ads, Clickbank etc.

I thought you had to have a certain number of views per YouTube video before you could run google ads on it (and possibly other affiliate stuff)

I'm struggling to hit the 1000 subscriber threshold before your channel can be monetised. Had a couple of videos do ok(ish) view wise but it looks like a long hard slog!

I am still hoping long term that I can make my channel become monetised but it's a very hard slog and depending on your niche, it is already a very full market!

Do you need to get 1000 views on every video you upload for them to let you turn on adsense?

Both my kids make some money from Youtube but it is a hard slog when you start unless you are very lucky. You need 1000 subscribers and you need to hit 4000 hours of viewing time. My eldest takes it a little bit more seriously than the other one so makes much more and it does go up and down depending on the popularity of the latest video. She's in sixth form so busy with studying but I would say the time commitment is equivalent to a hectic weekend job. There are definitely times when she feels overwhelmed having to edit etc new content and do homework and see friends! The money she gets from it is currently much more than if she got a Saturday job.

Her tip is regular content.

Thanks. Yeah I've heard consistency is key.

One other note of caution, having a YouTube channel also opens you up to having to deal with some not so pleasant people.

We have a van life/travel channel, get around 30k views pm and have 4200 ish subscribers. We make anywhere between 60-120pm. It works out about a pound per hour for the amount of time it takes to film, edit and upload. It isn't worth the money really. Our better months are usually because of topups from the superchats from doing livestreams.

I wouldn't recommend doing youtube to make money, you need to enjoy doing the video's really. Although the make money online niche does pay out better I've noticed. The thing is with that one is it's very competitive!

Consistency is key and also getting involved with the community commenting on other channels videos helped us earlier on. Good titles and thumbnails work well too... I think our channel would do much better if I made more effort with the thumbnails... I hate doing thumbnails haha!

@KirstyLSmith Interesting point about interacting with other channels.

I did hear a rumour YouTube are considering raising the threshold to higher than 1000 subscribers. Have you heard anything on this?
