I want to grow some of my own veg, but don't really have any garden space to do it. I was thinking of getting a veg trug for the patio and wondered if anyone had used them and if they were any good? I know they are a bit expensive, but have birthday, xmas etc coming up and might put it on my wish list!

I just had to look up what a 'veg trug' was lol

Anyway, my Mum has used them to grow all sorts of stuff now they have moved house to a smaller garden and they certanly seem to work well!

Is it a similar space issue for you as to why you can't plant the veg in the ground?

Well we redid our garden recently and there just wasn't really space for it without taking out valuable football pitch for my toddler (and my husband wasn't keen on that). Plus I like the idea of something up higher where I don't have to bend down and the slugs can't get at it! It's not as though I have time to deal with a massive patch anyway, so am thinking small!

I'd say this is a good example of brand promotion and a fancy website making something that is very simple and inexpensive that anyone could build seem like a must have premium item. It's just space you fill with soil to plant things in marketed to make it look like something special.

My main problem with it is the steep V shape design which means a lot of the "trug" is actually quite shallow and not suitable for all veg.

You could have something much better and cost efficient if you made something yourself out of scaffold boards or railway sleepers. Or any old pots and buckets if your not fussy about what it looks like.

This year I've had:

Potatoes growing in a dustbin
Carrots growing in a plastic box
Blueberries in flower pots
Strawberries in an old Guinea Pig cage. - The metal cage part keeps the birds off although the depth of the tray part isn't really deep enough.

Yes, but I have absolutely zero practical skills. I can't even hammer a nail in straight! I need something ready built I can plant into and hubbie is fussy about looks.
