Just got this invite the other day BUT it is for smartphones and tablets ONLY so I can't do it anyway, sigh!

Unable to see what the 'complications and pay' are as you need to sign an NDA Agreement to see what the task involves, so I have no idea if I would have gone for it anyway.

Please don't reply on here @snowwhyte if you have signed the NDA :)
Yeah I won't go into details but I decided it wasn't worth doing so I don't think you're missing anything.

New appen speech test

Hi Jonathan!

Appen is currently seeking a team of evaluators for an ongoing British-accented English speech collection project.

In this project, participants will have the opportunity to participate in multiple speech collections using our Appen Mobile Recorder (AMR) on smartphone or tablet. Speech samples collected will be used to help us better understand how humans interact with a conversational bot (such as Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri) and to improve technologies behind such devices.

We currently have two datasets available: free (spontaneous) and scripted. We would like to invite you to participate in the free speech collection first. The first 160 participants that complete the free speech collection will be invited to work on the scripted collection. We expect to complete the collection for this phase by end of day (11:59pm your local time) Tuesday, Feb 20. However, collection may be terminated earlier if enough recordings are gathered, so you are encouraged to complete the task as soon as possible.

In this free speech task, you will be given intents and will record, in a quiet location, what you would say to a conversational bot that can help you achieve such intents.

This task should take approximately 60 minutes and you will receive AU $17 via PayPal within 10 business days (12-14 days) after completion. Detailed task instructions are provided in the project task tile in AppenGlobal. Please read the instructions carefully as failure to adhere to them may make you ineligible for payment and/or participation in future projects. Your task tile will be similar to the one shown below. To access the task instructions, follow the steps on the blue button.

Yep, got this the other day, though mine differed slightly:

The deadline for completing the collection is Monday19th February, 2018.
In this task, qualified participants will record, with music playing in background, short samples of speech based on the prompts shown on the screen.
This task should take approximately 90 minutes and participant will receive an incentive via PayPal within 10 business days after completion. A detailed task instruction is provided on AppenGlobal. Please read the instruction carefully as failure to adhere to the instructions may make you ineligible for the incentive payment and/or participation in future projects.

I might have tried to get hold of a smartphone or tablet (don't have them) if I'd known the pay wasn't too bad for this one (was 10 USD for the last invite for a different project).

The one Jon posted is the one I was going to do. I was going to do it despite the low pay but i was put off by the free speech aspect. It's surprisingly difficult to think up things to say. My mind went blank.

My invite had the pay at a lot less than Aus$17. I wondered if the pay offered might have been a mistake as it was so low. Maybe no one was doing it and they upped it.

I didn't even get a hint of what the pay would be, so could only go on their last offer, which was low :(

Just checked the email again and mine was for the scripted speech with background music. Logging into the account via the email it shows the pay as being 13 USD for me.

Yeah, mine was $8 which is why I wondered if it was a mistake. £8 is fine for an hour $8 not so much.

I'm not surprised you turned it down then. I did just under 8 hours last year on a task at 13 AUS and ended up with nearly £68 after all fees etc. which equated to approx. £8.50

Yes, same here @Jon. REALLY tempted now but I don't have a smartphone. I do have a HP Touchpad but don't know if this would work without trying it out (I suppose it IS a tablet?) and the NDA mentions liability stuff and it being up to the Contractor to ensure they have the equipment, can do the task etc. so I am too scared to commit and try it, in case it turns out that I cannot do it.

I would put in a support ticket but they usually take ages to respond, so would be too late anyway. Any suggestions, folks?

Thanks

Why not just go for it and if you can't do it then just don't do it

Yeah, it's just the liability stuff that scares me, not knowing if I could end up having to pay them costs or something, don't really understand it - I'm such a wimp

What do you mean Liability? why would you have to pay them money?

Something about liquidated damages if you materially breach the agreement.
Legal gobbledegook just goes over my head, so don't know how agreeing to do something and then not doing it (for whatever reason) would fit in this situation, I guess.

I got this email too - I’ve never used Appen before, and when I log into global it says I have no projects, but on availability it says I have one... how do I access it? I’m so confused

Did you access it via the email link @BreeziOG ? It is on the first page for me, showing as 'Getting started with Appen' and 'Your Tasks'.

Sorry, not sure what you should do otherwise - Appen can be VERY confusing.

I decided not to proceed with mine as there is no guarantee it would work on my touchpad and would probably be a lot of faffing about for 90 mins work now, and probably the same amount later.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted :)

The start now isn’t a clickable link in my email... maybe I should try on the laptop instead of the iPad.

Yes, some things probably work best from a laptop or pc.

Sorry if I confused you about the email link, it was just to Appen, not a 'start up' one. The 'getting started' and 'your tasks' being on the first page (dashboard) once logged into your account.

Hope you've got it sorted now :)
