Hi,

I'm very interested in trying out trascribing but I've never done it before. I recently took the rev transcription test and failed, probably because I didn't read through the instructions so may try again another time if im allowed. I enjoy that sort of work and would like to possibly start doing it as a hobby for a bit of money. Is there anyone on here that does transcribing? Could you recommend any sites for me to try please? Also any helpful tips would be highly appreciated!

Kind regards
Abby

Textranch is the only one I ever see mentioned around here but from what I understand their communication isn't too hot so it may be a bit of a slog to get recruited by them

Hi Abby,

What's your KDPH (key depressions per hour) or audio speed and accuracy? If its under 65 words per minute, you won't get work, so it would be best to work on that first (there's loads of free online testing and training) before you try and get work through it. You'd also likely need some experience, so perhaps volunteering at a local place, most are always in need of minute takers.

In terms of what most people do - There are TV transcribers but you need serious skills to get in there, medical (need specialist knowledge for the terminology and a pile of experience), legal (again need a lot of experience and knowledge). There are other kinds of transcription but they are less frequently hiring. If you lack experience, deffo volunteer in the area you would like to transcribe so you can get the specialist knowledge you will need to make some money off it.

Honestly from what you're saying and your experience etc I'd say try to get another test with rev. Please don't think I'm being nasty but paying full attention is essential in transcription work - you often have to do research to ensure your work is accurate too. I also qualified with "go transcribe" i think their name was but their pay is much lower and their test was weirdly sarcastic throughout which I found off putting.

All that being said I don't think transcription work is one of the better payers but if you get on with it, go for it.

Crowdsurf is probably the easiest one to get accepted on. It’s pay is a pittance but I like it. The files are short and they pay reliably, even if it’s low! I also used scribie but I’m not keen on them so need to be really bored to use them. Take Note are fab if you can commit to 2 shifts per week. English company so no Americanisation, pays reliably too. Another one that I’m just dabbling in is Casting Words, haven’t done much for time yet as a recent discovery so can’t comment too much.

I just did a quick test on one website and I was around 72 words per minute and passed their test, I just messed up on the test with the multichoice answers, those damn apostrophes :oops:

I totally understand and agree with you about paying full attention, I will definitely try and give them another go, thank you :)

Abby have you tried Rev.com I managed to get some work on there, but their audio files are not very clear and pay rates not great, but it might be a good start for a beginner.

@Jon, TextRanch isn't a transcription site. It's for proofreading.
