Anyone else do this, either for fun or as a way to make a decent amount of money?

There is obviously risk involved but you accept that when you place the bet I guess.

Living in Leeds we love to go to Ebor Festival in York and have been to the Grand National numerous times as well plus other meetings inbetween.

Never bet more than £5 on each race I bet on and generally only bet where I know the jockey/trainer/horse history to try and limit the risk

Betting on football I suppose is a bit easier as you can just bet more on squash games (Man U/Chelsea vs the smaller premier teams etc)

sure is an interesting way to earn money when It pays off.

I can speak with much knowledge of this subject as my father trains greyhounds at Wimbledon.(Brian Nicholls)
Whilst I do gamble on anything from dogs to golf and have been doing all my life I wouldn't consider it a good way to make money for everybody as it has its ups and down.
One golden rule is never bet more than you can afford to lose. ;)

I do it for fun most weekends - small stakes usually on football accumulators at higher odds.

My opinion is it shouldn't be seen as a way of earning money, and have seen damage it can do to people who go chasing megabucks or even just their money back. That's not a dig at the previous post but it's so easy to get carried away and end up losing to 90th minute fluke goals etc.

If (and big if) you were to be very very regimented, I think you could earn small amounts without much risk.

Few tips worth looking at - register with Skybet/skyvegas, they are very good at giving out free bets (usually £2) on casino games in the hope you get hooked.

Bet365 do a thing for occasional big games where they will match your bet with an equal free bet on same match. That could potentially be £50 on a home win (your bet), £50 on a draw (free bet) then you use another betting site to put some money on an away win. You can't cover the 3 outcomes on bet365 but if you use another site you are guaranteed some form of profit if you do it right.

Be very wary of betting on French and Italian leagues. Don't want to be stereotypical but there's still corruption at some parts. There was a French match on Friday night where the half time and full time victors where widely known before a ball was kicked - maybe massive coincidence.

I am not sure why I would have thought it as a dig at my post ???
I agree with you that it isn't a way to earn money as I do it for fun also. :)

Laid down a £20 bet on Blackburn to win this weekend £50+ return so figured it was worth a punt

I would say I'm quite an authority figure when it comes to betting selections and horse racing. PM sent.

I haven't made my bets yet but had a quick look at odd/matches

Safer bets - Wolves Double chance, Leyton Orient Double Chance, Aberdeen to win,

Slightly more speculative - Brentford, Derby,

I'm more into the flat season - but then I would be as I live in HQ (Newmarket), just down the road from Tattersalls and a brisk walk from the Rowley Mile and the July Course. The flat season is just around the corner, and the town is already springing back to life. I love seeing all the ladies and gents in their finery when we have meetings on.

There are trainer's yards at every turn - some are right in the town centre. It is a thrilling and unique place to live. Even though I know very little about thoroughbreds, they blow me away with their beauty every time I see one of the strings winding its way through the narrow terraced streets near me on the way to the gallops for morning exercise. Stunning. (I don't work for the tourist board by the way!)

Betting on the gee-gees seems to be a very precarious hobby and not someting I indulge in. I will be watching the Gold Cup as much as I can though - these big events make your spine tingle don't they? Perhaps the equivalent of Royal Ascot?

Good luck to everybody having a punt

I love the NH season although the ground can get a bit crazy and some horses just dont like the mud. Out of all the meetings, Cheltenham has to be my #1 and I do get quite excited, especially with the quality of horses on display :)

Hopefully no-one followed that, safer ones were fine and Brentford too. Derby let me down

I don't do the Class 1 big races as a betting medium, but Hurricane Fly 3.20 @ Cheltenham will be tough to beat.
