Hi all,
I've probably asked this already, but please have patience :)...

I want to take my own screenshots (of all shapes and sizes) for blog posts.

I've tried taking a screenshot on my Windows 10 laptop, saving as PNG, then resize on befunky.com or similar, and finally compressing the image.

But how I keep the images consistent and the same width?

As long as you are using a responsive theme it should resize the images correctly based on the device the user is using

Thanks for link, sounds complicated
Use Canva and just create blog featured images to the required size but like I said as long as the theme is responsive any other images you put it in will just fit the device people are reading your blog on

@Jon, thanks. For your blog - what size do you upload your feature images at?
Do you download from Canva as PNG or JPEG?

... And for images inside blog content are you also using Canva? And keeping all images the same width?

My understanding is that screenshots (e.g. for How-to posts) should be PNG and photo images should be JPEG.

Yeah png is fine

I don’t use ANY set image sizes, the theme just alters / crops to suit where they are

@Jon, sorry to keep asking this one. But looking at your TMS blog...do you:
  • Upload your feature images as 930 x 620 pixels?
  • Upload your images for use WITHIN a blog post as 1024 pixels wide (and whichever height) to correspond with the default WordPress large image size max 1024px? - Then WP scales it down to fit the desktop/tablet/mobile screen?

Thanks @Jon for advice. @katykicker, hoping you may also be able to advise.

I want to display the blog post featured image in the archive section only (i.e. on "Blog" page showing all posts). I won't display a featured image WITHIN blog posts.

Are you uploading just a small image, say 300 x 225, as your featured image thumbnail? (or is there a minimum size needed in case the post get shared on social media?)

I'm finding this really confusing/conflicting between YouTube tutorials and how-to guides that contradict each other.

Honestly @rninja I just upload one post, usually about 1200 x 800 or 800 x 1200 I think, and Wordpress automatically does all the resizing and makes multiple copies in different sizes for it. I have an Ad network who take care of most of the tech side for me these days so I don't even need to think about, sorry that's probably not much help!

I had loads of problems with this when I had a blog. It was the most time consuming aspect..even with a responsive template the images would look different sizes on the homepage with the list of latest posts and the "read more". Nightmare

That must have been a theme issue yeah?

Homepages generally squash the featured image and then the blog posts shows the full sized version that may be resized based on the device the user is using to look at your website

Appreciate that there are thousands of WordPress themes. But still think there's a gap in the market for someone to make the whole process much easier - for screenshot & image taking/resize/compression and upload to WP.

Whereas with KDP, Redbubble, etc you know what image sizes to work with.

I literally just put an image of any size into blog posts and the theme just 'does its thing'. The only exception to this is a featured image where it WILL cut bits off depending on the size it wants but it's not something I've ever had huge trouble with tbf no matter which theme i've used over the years!

@Jon, is there a minimum recommended featured image size in case someone shares the blog post on social media?

Nope, Facebook / Twitter etc should just resize the image however I THINK Yoast offers the ability to give the blog post an 'image' to use as the header one for if the article is shared on social media

Thanks for advice. Creating a feature image in Canva - if you use a photo, the Canva PNG is massive (even after PNG resize and compression).

Instead, thinking of going for feature images without photos like this blog

Would it matter if I made say 768 x 432 in Canva, instead of for example 1024 x 683 or 1280 x 720?

All depends on the theme, it the featured image looks OK at 768 x 432 then just stick with that
