I’m currently in process of moving homes, the area I’m in doesn’t yet have Fibre or Ultra Fast broadband.

I’ve decided to go with Sky for TV & Broadband but after testing the broadband the signal is shocking (can’t reach to first floor from ground floor)

I’ve been looking into the MiFi/WiFi portable home routers and putting an unlimited sim inside and cancelling the sky internet but keeping the TV package and was wondering if anybody else uses these or have done in the past and what are they like? Or does anyone have any other ideas for WiFi.

We've looked at Sky before but the issue we have is the same issue with basically anything that goes through OpenReach in that the speeds are just awful even though we live in a big city like Leeds.

By comparison with Virgin Media we get 300mb speeds and it just always works (baring any network outages)

If the speeds to your property are good but the wifi from the Sky router is pants could you use a better router to fix the problem?

We've used my iPhone as a 5G hotspot when out and about and the speeds are fantastic HOWEVER I am not convinced that it could be used for streaming 4K or online gaming but if all you want it for is 'work stuff' then it should be fine imo

I’m currently with Virgin at my previous property however they don’t service my new properties area.

The speeds are shocking, not just the router unfortunately I’ve looked at satellite WiFi but doesn’t seem great.

The WiFi would be used for on-demand services and other general household use.

I’m just a little stuck on what to do lol

Right so are you saying no matter which ISP you go with if it goes through OpenReach the speeds are bad then?

I don't have a phone line so use mobile broadband for my internet. I'm paying £25 a month with Vodaphone for unlimited data although I notice it has gone up to £30 now for new customers. Speeds aren't great but enough for browsing internet/watching YouTube and streaming videos.

I've just got a FTTC connection setup with Now broadband (their £20 up to 63mbps package) and it's ace so far.

Distance from the exchange can impact speeds, or if the local street cabinet is over capacity.

Have you thought about using a signal booster, or an Ethernet cable from the router to your PC/laptop?

But if you go with the MiFi mobile broadband option, then it's worth trying out different network SIMs to test signal strength and speed.

I couldn’t really just use mobile tethering as the MiFi/WiFi mobile router will be the main internet for the whole house, TV’s, consoles and other WiFi needed gadgets including Sky Q boxes so this is why I’m thinking of the mobile router option.

Checked with them and their speed is same as the area just doesn’t have any super fast or fibre options available at the moment for any network… so stressful lol

I still find it nuts that we still basically only have 3 options for broadband even though its one of our major utilities just like Gas / Leccy etc.

You have to either get

VirginMedia / Kcom (if you live in Hull!)

Tether over 4G/5G

A solution that goes through Openreach

There should be FAR more competition than there is! The fact old copper lines are still being used is crazy, what happened to the BIG push for FTTP that was going on a few years ago!
