Hey there everyone I am hoping some of you might have some interesting insights to add to my thoughts.

I am in the process of compiling a strategy for - building a following of people interested in - food, related good causes and business. It is a niche that I am looking to get hold of relevant people for and then work to my advantage.

As such I am looking for resources and have been learning from

- Escape the City
- Ramit Sethi
- Seth Godin

Does anybody have any recommendations for:

- related businesses and organisations that I should engage with
- information relating to how to build a following (a Tribe as Seth and ETC both call it)
- experience in setting up a webshop as I'd like to find a low-admin way to do this and use it to promote relevant businesses and causes

Any help would be much appreciated.

Just speaking from experience, building up a following is HARD

You need a focal point for them to get behind I have found with building a community.

A forum, a facebook group etc

Thanks Jon

The intention is to build the focus around the most suitable platform when the time is right. I am just looking at ways to build said following. I fully expect it to be very very difficult.

I got to about 775 maybe 800 followers at one point on my get rich quick twitter. But they weren't engaging followers and the value was minimal. I am looking to build a stronger following this time even if it is a lot smaller the quality needs to be there.

Yeah it's that quality that is the problem

I could EASILY open the floodgates on here and let non UK people have their accounts approved. Membership would go up, so would the post count as spam comes etc.

You need to have tight controls of your audience from the start if you want quality

Alot of people are successful by using themselves as the marketing tool, .. it becomes like soap opera to eagerly await their next youtube video (I know because I do enjoy quite a few!). In this case though you usually have to GIVE something of yourself to your followers, be a bit of a hero. Otherwise what can you give to them that they can't get elsewhere - offers maybe? Also find a niche of some sort, and be quite clear about it but don't confine yourself. Just some thoughts.

I used to use EKM for my ecommerce shop when I had one.

Sounds interesting.

Also if you are looking at targeting some kind of 'make money' stuff then prepare to have to wallow in the shit for quite some time as the sort of people you will have trying to connect with you and your brand you won't want to touch at all

Thanks for the responses so far a few ideas and a bit of reading on things to do.

I don't intend to make money from it through these partnerships with providers of sustainable services etc.

Thanks so far
