Hi All

After a bit of advice. I have tried a couple of online transcribing companies and have been knocked back. I was wondering if you could give me a bit of advice how to increase my chances. I always pass the tests and I use Grammarly to help ensure that I am using the correct grammar. This is something that I would really really like to get into so I would be so grateful for any help.

Thanks a million.

If you pass the tests what is the reason they are knocking you back for?

Sorry that’s me not being very clear, I pass the initial grammar tests but then fail the audition test

It could be your typing speed? You need to be at least 65wpm for most. It's just a case of keep practicing. It took me three months and numerous attempts!

ah right, I imagine the requirements for these sort of companies will be the same across all of them sadly

I tried with transcribe me first as they let you take the test a few times in a relatively short window. You then usually have to wait 3-6 months. I decided I really wanted to work for take note so spent time really practicing whenever I got time. for me it was always speed that let me down as I also used grammarly, although it's American so remember some of their grammar rules are different.

Typing speed for sure, but don’t forget accuracy. It’s no good if you can type 70wpm but every other word is spelled incorrectly, or the wrong word has been used.

I just spent a whole day doing the Transcribe Me Quickstep exam and thought I'd followed the style guide to the letter. I carefully researched all the names and titles to make sure I spelt them right. Disappointed!

Finished off with scores of 96% 91% and 96% on the audio parts which were fails. I passed the multiple choice section. I'm hoping they manually review my transcriptions to see if they can up my grade and allow the pass. Has this happened with anyone else?

I wrote about Crowdsurf on my blog, here's the link in case you wanted to know more :)

@charlyn I enjoyed your blog post :D Good explanation of the weird sign up scenario! I was wondering if you found you got paid more after you had been with them a longer amount of time? I think with TranscribeMe and Scribie they say you get access to higher paid jobs as your score/experience goes up.

I'm really enjoying the transcription but I'm not sure I can carry on with it because the pay is so low :( Problem is, now I want to get to the minimum thresholds for payout on Transcribe Me and Scribie and it's going to take ages!

It does depend how good the audio file is. For high quality files I'm faster and get up to £2/hour. Low quality ones that take a lot of relistens drop me down to 50p/hour.

At least with Crowdsurf and Scribie you can preview the file. Transcribe Me just throw you them at random!

£2 an hour
That’s genuinely horrendous.

Scribe is one if the lowest paid! $2 for a 10 minute audio of poor quality! I started with them and Crowdsurf, now have found 2 companies in England (One I'm training for and they are not taking on currently at £0.60 a minute of audio but goes up after training ) and the other is Bristol Transcription who pay the same rate, but more tricky files are £0.75 an audio minute. Compare that to Crowdsurf which is around £0.35 an audio minute at level 1 which they keep you at forever lol. I'm also doing music transcription, (got lucky and can't say who NDA!) With them I make around £11-14 an hour depending on the task pool. Mostly the lyrics are there and you just listen and edit where needed, and then sync them to the song, tricky at first but it's my fave job. I can say the company in a message but can't say who their client is, but they are big.
The ONLY good thing about starting with places like scribie is that you get practice and experience which will get you better work eventually!

Good to know there are better companies out there! I will take a look at Bristol Transcription. If you're able to send me a message about who the other 2 companies are that would be great, but understand if you can't due to NDA.

I earn most of my money through transcribing. I use Take Note and Crowdsurf. Just going the two shifts a week for Take Note pays over £200 a month and I know if I need more I can add extra shifts in. I tend to do one evening one and the weekend shift. I then add crowdsurf in when I have the odd half an hour to spare here and there. It soon adds up. Like you I probably average about £2-3 hour but as I do it little bursts it doesn’t seem so awful. What I do like about crowdsurf is that it pays out quickly so i know I can be paid within 24 hours if I needed to be.

I’m also going to look into Bristol Transcription. Now I’ve got some experience I think I can probably do OK in most companies.

I just don't enjoy transcription work, I am a copy typist and done office work for years, but audio I don't enjoy at all. I recently gave it a try again and signed up to Rev and Scribe, completed about 4 jobs and now given up. I much prefer straight copy typing from a hard copy, but not the work nowadays. Good luck to those doing transcription work, it's not easy work.
