Well literally a year later I'm back at this point again LOL

It's MOT / Service next month and I'm just like do I throw money at this car (2010 Corsa) or exchange for another 2nd hand or do I finally start looking at Lease Agreements and just accept another Direct Debit in my like like I would do with my phone contract!!

You could potentially just have the MOT on the car done without the service just to see how well the car is holding up, and then if it passes fine with little or no advisories then have the service done and keep it for another year?

David’s Idea is sound.

Throw it in for an MOT and if it is borked don’t spend any more money on it.

If not, decide whether you want to spend the money on the service. Is it a car you want to keep for another 8 years?

I’m pretty certain I buying a brand new Dacia next year. Taking into account the extra warranty and paid in advance servicing its will cost £5-8k less than its closest competitor. For 5 years trouble free driving, road tax for the first year and all servicing costs.

Unless you want a ‘fancy’ car, it seems the way forward. Sure, its not a 8 year old corsa in cost but some of their range has a high-enough spec and for pootling round town and the occasional long journey, it will be cheaper than the cheapest.

Put the corsa in for an MOT, if it passes (or needs little) then drive to a Dacia dealer and see what you can PX it for.

Not Sexy
Not Cool
Not earth-shattering to drive

BUT

Cheap, functional and cheap. A

TopGear Magazine recently voted the Dacia Duster 9/10! They must be doing something right as a poverty-spec off-roader is the kind of thing that TopGear hates!

Yes, this.

Depending on what was done last year and how much you use it then if MOT is ok you could probably get away with just changing the oil and filters. That should be around £50.

Well yesterday was NEW CAR DAY

giphy.gif

In the end after talking it over with everyone that exists on the plant AND the local Vauxhall dealership I sort of had 3 options.

1) Buy a 2nd hand one (around £5000 for a decent 2015 Corsa with low mileage etc)
2) 0% for 5 years on a 2018 Corsa (fairly chunky monthly payments) (decent spec)
3) Lease a 2018 corsa for 4 years, higher spec, lower monthly payments (£130) and then either return / buy or trade it in at the end of the term.

The latter one is an odd one for me to get my head round as it's like a debt but not a debt because you can't pay it off early. It just sort of sits there and comes out of your account each month however it is option 3 that we decided to go for in the end based on a lower outgoing, Car Tax being paid, and the higher spec offering..

Picked it up yesterday and will be driving it GRANNY STYLE over the weekend no doubt!

I believe you can 'pay it off' early by just handing the car back after the half-way point. As long as you are within the mileage expected at that point in the deal you shouldn't have to pay any extra.

£130*12*4 = about £6k

You could own a brand new Dacia for about that money. with a full warranty.

And probably as exicitng and reliable as a corsa!

:p

Been getting used to having Cruise Control today (well as much as I can on 40mph roads in Leeds!) Got some motorway driving to do next week so will give it a good test then!

Everyone and their dog seem to be writing to me at the moment. Evans Halshaw, Vauxhall Themselves, Vauxhall Finance Group, Hastings Direct, Car Tax People.

On the plus side I think a few days in I'm over the mindset of 'This car isn't really mine' and I just see it as my car now lol. Not sure why I thought that would be such a mental hurdle to get over!

Wait until you get to a 50 mph motorway limit. Cruise control comes into its own. No danger of speeding tickets.

When I leased I didn’t ever think about the ownership of the car. It was ‘mine’ until I handed it back.

Because if you scratch it or kerb an alloy you cant just say oh its a little scratch I can live with that. You have to get it fixed or pay up when it comes to hand back time

Not entirely.

There is ‘wear and tear’ rules. I think out of 4 alloys (all kerbed) I had to pay £20 towards one of them.

I used HP for my new wheels. Got a 5 year warranty with it. But it costs a lot more per month than @Jon is paying for his corsa!
