Hi all, hope noone minds me posting. I'm looking for a bit of inspiration, for my next step. I have been working for myself for the last 10 years and tbh I am ready for a change for various reasons, firstly (although this could be the case anyway), I'm sick of noone having my back and feeling so vulnerable, my husband is unhappy in his job and I want to take the pressure off him and tbh I'm sick of feeling like I should be working all the time, often for less than the minimum wage. I am investigating different avenues, thinking about retail, office work etc. Ideally I would like a job where I have the flexibility to do some work from home, but I want to be employed by someone. I'm not quite in a position where I can work full time (kids are 13 and 10), although I have applied for one full time job, wondering if I can negotiate hours. Also I dont drive and dont believe it is something I could master, failed four tests long ago and would be a nervous wreck especially driving in London and cannot afford a car. Well done if you've got this far, basically I was wondering if anybody would be able to advise me at all in terms of job possibilities and maybe agencies I can contact. All my experience is in merchandising, mystery shopping, auditing etc and I think it would probably be better to stay in this area as this is where my experience is. Any advice would be very welcome

Hello

Good luck in moving forward. I read your post and even through I dont really have any expertise in the areas of work that you are looking at (I am a previous teacher) I just thought I would give you some advice. Don't be put off about applying for other jobs that you feel you have no experience in - I left teaching and landed a job as a travel expert (for kuoni so a big firm) because I spent time working/travelling abroad - I literally went to the job interview looking like an exhausted teacher thinking no chance. I then spent three years working there before leaving for having a child.

You have got experience with kids - teaching assistant? (I can imagine there would be lots of work for this in London even if you work as supply for a bit and would work around your own children).

Thanks for the reply, especially re applying for jobs where I haven't got experience I have applied for a job at yell.com, but I'm not sure I can do the hours, have got a phone interview on Sunday. TBH working as a TA wouldn't be for me, I'm not really a kid person, sorry I know that sounds awful. Will keep an open mind though about what to apply for.

Good luck! Im sure you will find something. If they want you they will negotiate the hours (I currently work in a nursery - they wanted someone to work five days a week - I negotiated them down to three).

Hmm. I know it's my background but the public sector is ALWAYS looking for staff. The good thing about interviews at places like the Council is that they ask everyone the exact same questions when they get Interviewed so there are no surprises!

Hospitals also I imagine will have a HUGE staff drive in the coming months as well

This is a hard one. I was made redundant from a part-time council job about 4 years ago now. I never managed to find another one to suit my life although I do keep an eye out. And hence I ended up doing more of this online stuff :D plus some volunteer work so I had some people contact LOL.

I don't have any real advice as I have always struggled with knowing what I want to do for a living. Even now I don't have an idea! I literally just work to make some money. I'm grateful my kids do not seem to be following in my footsteps in this regard.

Good luck with this.

I was about to suggest teaching assistant. That is what I do through an agency and I thought that it would be hard to get something new if the one I am hoping to go back to fell through. I was told they are expecting to need more than ever to help children catch up. Not driving may be an issue unless you get an ongoing place near by.

I'm not public sector, but know people that have done recruitment for those roles. As Jon suggests, all interviews are in the STAR format so it's easy to prepare for.

Aye, it's like "are they going to ask me why I left that job 2 years ago or why there is a gap in my years of work' - THEY ARE NEVER GOING TO ASK EITHER OF THOSE QUESTIONS lol

Thanks I will look on the council websites. Also thought about the hospital, but I had a horrible experience working in on the staff bank as a receptionist four years ago, I was let go cause someone was rude to me and I was slightly rude back after a lot of provocation. Prior to that I had trained people and they had a lot of staffing issues. I know that sounds like an excuse, but to be honest it has taken me years to get over and my confidence is still massively knocked.I'm also assuming that there will always be a black mark against me regarding applying for permanent jobs, even though I was told at the time that wouldn't be the case. That said, I cannot help thinking that NHS staff will be held in better esteem after these times and I know the benefits are very good. I realise how horribly self-interested all this sounds, but quite frankly I am sick of being up against it.
