Firstly, WOW that's a huge prize and secondly it is so hard to monitor. There is nothing to stop me losing "4lbs" every week even if I don't.

Also like you said, different people have different amounts to lose, I will lose more quicker than someone who only only looking to lose a stone.

This is a toughie.

That is a really nice gesture, however there is no way it could be done. People lie. (sorry, but it's true lol)

On that note, I lost 9 stone this week...

Let's say you can't have both. One of the other

If you are someone who enjoys food then the ONLY option for you (assuming you don't have the metabolism of a 17 year old) will be to do more fitness so that the amount of food you are eating doesn't cause you damage in the long run..

However if you work full time the thought of hitting the gym or going to a class after work can be soul destroying. Maybe a good social circle of friends at said fitness place could help alleviate all that

If you are someone who can't spend the time (or money) doing the fitness then food control is the only way in which you can eat all the food you want without there being any long term damage to your body.

Seems they are the only 2 options available if you want to enjoy lots of food AND not risk damaging your body

We need to invent a 3rd lol

I think for all round good health then moderation in both is best. I think walking is much better for you than running in fact, long daily walks are good for exercise. There are plenty of unhealthy skinny people around who eat loads of junk food and never gain weight. It should be about balance and health.

I will likely get flamed now but I don't think exercise is helpful for weightloss. It's mostly diet. Exercise makes you fitter and feel good, so it's worth it.

You need both.

Does exercise not burn carbs when you do it?

100% agree. There's more and more research finding that the link between exercise and losing weight is quite weak.

This is a good read that was published in Time magazine: https://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/polisci/faculty/chwe/austen/cloud2009.pdf

Of course exercise is good for you in terms of fitness and long term health, but to lose weight you're better off concentrating on your diet.

A lot of what we've been told is healthy in the past (cereals for breakfast, rice, pasta and a carb heavy diet) is actually far worse than the once demonised fatty nuts and meats. It's processed food and sugar that's making us fat.

So you are saying to lose weight the only way is to diet?

What I'm saying is that changing your diet is far more effective than exercise for weightloss, but exercise is important for your overall health.

Of course exercise has some effect, but not to the extent that most people think. To think that you can eat what you like and exercise it all off is a too simplistic view of the issue.

Yeah I would agree there..

I think if someone is trying to lose weight though and it's equally a psychological issue (maybe they are in a rut, or just have bad eating habits they picked up through childhood) then fitness may be a way they feel they can have more control over the situation compare to dieting where they may feel it is a constant uphill battle.

In a nutshell the more calories that are burned than are taken in would result in weight loss

Yup, I agree with Scott.

If you eat too much fat, you excrete the excess (oh, charming stuff). If you eat too many carbs, you store it as bodily fat.

Exercise is good for your mental health though, as well as your cardiovascular health.

I found a cool link today that explains where fat goes. I was going to post it on the diet thread, but can't find it. Apparently we breathe it out. So get breathing! Blow up a few balloons or something.

Oh, actually. The first time I did the GNR I lost 7lb overnight. And kept it off. I think it was liquid that went out of the blisters, or something like that, though.

I'm Team Diet. I've run five marathons and an average runner will burn 100 calories for each mile run. Putting that in context if I'm preparing for a marathon I'll run at least 5 miles a night, so 500 calories.... no more than a couple of chocolate bars. At the same time in order to run well, and for my body to repair itself I'll be consuming an extra 500 calories in veg/pasta before a run and plenty of protein after.

On the opposite side of that argument, when I'm not running I can reduce the amount of calories in what I'm eating by switching chocolate for veg etc, and I lose weight very quickly without exercise.

This is really interesting to watch about Sami Inkinen. World Champion triathlete who 'runs on fat' rather than carbs. His performance has improved substantially and his move to running on fat is the result of being diagnosed with pre-diabetes due to the carb loading he used to do.

For me personally I can eat the foods that I eat and stay the same. When I exercise as well as eating my usual food I lose weight.

I have lost 18lbs since January by exercising. I've not been able to exercise as much now as my bursitis is playing up but I've kept all of the weight off thus far (2 months or so).

With dieting I would just gain the weight back afterwards.

I don't eat a high carb diet and choose high fat over high sugar. I have PCOS and I've recently started back on some old tablets, so should start to lose a bit of weight again.

To not gain weight on steroids has been amazing for me and exercising/eating the same food, has helped. I have bad food sometimes (pizza/takeaways) but mostly I stick to wholegrain breakfasts, light lunches, snacks of things like rice crackers, brown breadsticks and low GI foods.

I personally don't like salad, at all. I eat vegetables with at least 2 meals and try to eat foods high in Vitamin D/Folic Acid as I'm always very low on those and take prescribed meds for that.

I'm overweight and definitely think that high fat / exercise over high sugar / exercise makes a big difference.

To summarise I would choose exercise to lose weight as it has worked for me. I've burned off quite a bit of fat, but still have a large amount to go! I did walking at home videos mostly and did some jogging too. I found the speed walking/light exercises added in, really effective. Also didn't put too much pressure on my knee. That happened when I started jogging more.

For me if I exercise I do find the weight stays down. I find the most effective exercise is walking so am trying to do that more as time and the weather allows.
I do have exercise DVD's I use but mostly I try to be more active during the day. I use a Pedometer app on my phone Accupedo which is really good as I do more now to get nearer to the 10,000 steps goal. When I go for a walk I use the Mapmywalk app so I can see how far I have walked when I get back home and how many calories I have burned. Of course these apps are maybe not a hundred per cent accurate but I use them as guidance and as a motivator to get more active.
I don't really diet I just try to eat healthily plenty of fruit vegetables and salad. I always check food labels when I am out before I buy anything and try to stick to low fat low sugar foods as much as possible.
The traffic light system on packet foods is great as you can easily see the high fat/high sugar foods. I try to aim for green or the amber at most and only indulge occasionally in things like ice cream which is in the red for sugar. Yogurt is good and if I buy some frozen raspberries from Aldi and their low fat yogurt it makes a really nice healthy dessert.
As with everything it is getting the balance right.
