Personally, I'd disagree.
I lost weight after I started running and my jeans were practically falling off but I don't have a particularly unhealthy diet anyway.

I do eat some junk but I don't spend the day stuffing myself with crisps and chocolate and expect a quick run in the evening to fix it and I think that's part of the problem. Some people do expect that.

I wasn't focused on weight loss anyway. I don't care how much I weigh but I do care about flab :D I hate it!

I think exercise has a role - for me, upping the exercise is all part of getting psychologically into the idea of being healthier all round, as well as the fact that it does help you tone up and feel like you're getting somewhere when you're dieting. For the actual weight loss though, I think it has to be calorie reduction and definitely less sugar.

The other thing is that muscle is heavier than fat, so you can be completely toned and not have lost weight!

I choose none of the above but Choose Self control instead, and here's why:- over 10 years now I have battled with my weight. Basically I have a big body, when I seriously started diet and exercise I lost half my weight. Since then I have been on a roller coaster, it's either I had lost too much then tried putting it back on, but when I did it changed my original body shape. It's been up and down but I'm so tired of it all now and I'm now turning to self control. I should put a balance to everything that way I'm hoping to be at my best.

I try and follow an 80/20 rule. It is 80% about diet and 20% about exercise. And I eat a low carb diet (80% of the time!)
And I don't pay for exercise usually, running, cycling and walking are all free, good for my mental, emotional and cardiovascular health

Muscle weighs the same as fat. A pound of anything is a pound. Fat takes up more volume than muscle which is why people say muscle weighs more than fat presumably.

I've got a lot of fat

Of course a pound of anything weighs a pound.
However, muscle is more dense and that's what people mean when they say it weighs more. It's the same with helium and air.

That's why I don't pay attention to how much I weigh. Unless you're really overweight then I don't think it tells you much.
Weight can fluctuate for a number of reasons and a weight gain isn't necessarily a bad thing or even in your control.
It's just a number that's easy to measure whereas % body fat is more difficult to calculate.

Whilst I'm on a mini rant I may as well mention BMI. What a load of crap that is :D

I would definitely sign up to the self-control diet. I see cookies... I eat cookies. No control whatsoever! What are your top 10 self control tips Mai Yami?

Exactly....I have known people whose BMI put them in the 'obese' category when in fact they were just very muscular.

Exercise is just as important as nutrition. Fact! Without exercise, you will not burn half the amount of calories you need to burn FAT, not just water. Ah I can't believe I've just read someone saying that they don't think exercise is helpful. Either you need to research the benefits of physical activity or you are ignoring the obvious. The amount of times that I see people ( mainly women) lose weight through just 'dieting' and are left with so much lose skin and no shape at all to the body...''Why?'' Do I hear you ask? Because not only are they losing 'weight', they are losing muscle mass too. The skin is ten times more elastically and loses it's firmness. Let's not forget what physical activity does for us on the inside people. Exercise builds a stronger heart, meaning your heart has to work a lot less than someone who is sedentary. It also reduces are risks of developing osteoporosis early and other conditions, such as colon cancer and breast cancer.

I've lost over 80 lbs ( over five stone) and trust me, I wouldn't have the body I have now if i just relied on a calorie deficit. Too busy to exercise? Well, increase your daily activity by parking away from work and walking or just walking to work. Get a bike! Use the stairs, not the lift. Get a fitbit flex activity tracker watch and track total daily expenditure and set yourself challenges via the fitbit app. No matter how busy you are, there is always an opportunity to get more exercise into your daily routine and doesn't mean popping a exercise video in the dvd. Seriously, get a fitbit flex watch. I had one to review on my blog and they were really useful, especially if you prefer cardio like running, walking, etc.

As for the scales and bmi, it's only useful if you are looking for a starting point. Some people have no clue that they weight x amount because they've avoided the scale for so long and as a result, put more weight on. Get on the scale, measure, take a before photo and use it as a starting point. Don't hog the scale, leave it well alone and get on it monthly. Just remember that the scales don't take water, muscle, tissue into account. Don't weight on the evening either!!! Morning and after you have emptied yourself.

When I started losing weight, I quickly realized that in order to get proper fit and look good, I'd have re-educate myself and move away from all the misconceptions to do with losing weight. Now i'm 80 lbs lighter and in the middle of my personal trainer diploma. Be careful when looking online though and there are some really unreliable content out there in regards to weight loss and fitness. If you have read one article that makes you think that exercise doesn't do 'jack shit' for you, you really need to do A LOT more research and not look for an excuse not to exercise. If anything, you better off eating a normal diet where you treat yourself more than once a week to whatever you want, with the odd sweet everyday, but then exercise 3 times a week. Than no exercise and just a diet, which for most is usually a fad diet anyway.

well I'm not going to argue with a personal trainer about exercise :D personally I don't find it helpful for weight loss but if some people do that's great. Obviously I do know that exercise is super important for both physical and mental health and no one should ever give up on exercise just because it's not helping them with their weight loss!

As a way to loose weight or get healthy, diet is definitely the number 1 priority, without a doubt. Exercise and cardio etc massively helps but a good diet is the basis of everything

Personally I diet to lose weight and I exercise to try and tone up. So if my goal was simply weight loss then I would choose diet, but I think the end result would be a thinner but saggier me
