Do you still need your title deeds for your house?

We had a letter from our solicitor today to say that they will no longer store our title deeds? I always thought that these had to be stored away from home but do we still need them now everything is digital.

Ours are in the bottom of our cupboard which is where they have stayed for the last 10 years

not even sure I've ever looked at it

Ours are at home too. Once the mortgage was paid, they were sent back to us.
Well that's odd cos we got them at the start..

Were we not meant to?? lol

I think you do need them although copies can be obtained if you needed to. Just keep them in a safe place at home, they will be fine.

Google says:

In times gone by, if there was a mortgage on a property the lender would hold the deeds. If there was no mortgage the owner of the property would have them. However, these days there is no longer any need for physical deeds to a house if it is registered with the Land Registry.

So I guess that now it would be usual to have the physical deeds. When we bought our house over 30 years ago, it wasn't. The house is well over a hundred years old, so the deeds make for interesting reading. Apparently the house was built in only 3 weeks! That would explain the wonky walls then lol.

Our house was first mentioned in a will of 1888. The deeds have all sort of clauses about not brewing spirits or running a gambling den as the land was owned by the nearby church. When we bought it you needed the deeds if you wanted to sell it and the advice was not to keep them in the house in case of fire but that is obviously a thing of the past. The bottom of the wardrobe it is Jon.
