Just wondering cause my various income streams aren't working that well at the moment and I need to investigate other options. Thanks

Do you have a background in writing for advertising? If not then I would suggest starting out on likes like people per hour and building your reputation up.

I don't have a background as such, but I did used to blog and I did start a Journalism course 10 years ago, I couldn't finish it cause it was the wrong time. I am thinking about doing a course once our house move is complete. People per hour sounds like a good idea

I do. I've been freelancing through PPH for about 10 years now, and it's taken a LONG time to build a decent profile. I would recommend it as having a few decent protections in place when you're starting out, however.

A few tips:

Look for pre-funded jobs - they're serious about awarding them
Don't just apply for copywriting jobs - it's all about building your profile at first
If you've got anything published online (even a blog), link to this in your portfolio so you can prove it's yours - I know of plenty of people who have had work stolen
Better still, send examples through to clients with proposals
Don't promise to over-deliver if it's going to dip you below minimum wage - you'll have PPH fees to pay out of the client's budget
Don't sell yourself short - the going rate for 500 words there is around £25, so you're not going to lose anything by quoting the same even if you're starting out
Put up a few 'Offers', especially if you have niche areas of interest
Short and to the point tends to work best (for me) for proposals - I always start with why the job caught my eye, and what I've written that's similar

And most of all, good luck. You'll only get 15 proposals unless you pay for more, and there's a chance you won't get anything your first month, I'm afraid. Keep going, however, and message me if I can help further.

Thank you very much for these tips. I am stopping my hosting for my blog at the end of Feb, as I haven't blogged for over a year, but have got all the work I did on a memory stick. I might do a course as well, but will start out and see what happens. Thanks again, I am prepared for it to take a long time, just feel that I need a change of direction.

Screenshot it before it comes down, or at least anything you're proud of writing and which got a lot of views. I've found that really useful in terms of giving potential clients something to look at.

Brilliant. Get screenshots of them on that USB stick too - if the design of the site is nice, that's good for your portfolio.

Actually, if you really wanted to get ahead of the game, it's worth seeing what most clients are asking for in terms of subject matter, and doing some research on the subject. Cryptocurrency is popular (predictably), as is finance in general.

Just realised that I cannot find my USB stick, but luckily I have saved my documents as word documents. Not sure about writing about finance cause I don't know much about it, but I will do some research . Thanks again

Make sure you watermark them, and only make the first paragraph readable with a message that you'll supply the document to interested potential clients to get a feel for your writing.

Paranoid? Me? Nope, just had my work stolen a couple of times. Don't want that to happen to anyone else if I can help it.
