Does anyone do competitions?

I know there are some real hardcore compers out there and I have read stories about people making a lot of money or winning a lot of "stuff" from internet competitions.

I used to do a LOT of competitions about 10 to 12 years ago - when most of us were still on dial-up, Mark Zuckerberg was still at Primary School and smartphones didn't exist. I had a fair bit of success with them too - best prizes were a pair of diamond earrings worth about £250 in a Valentine's Day related promotion and two return flights to anywhere in France with a week's car hire thrown in. We had a really good holiday in the Dordogne and all we paid for was a week in a gite. I also won lots of smaller things like wallets, DVDs, tshirts, software or chocolate.

Have given up these days though. There are just SO many competitions, so many websites, and I don't want to spend hours every day entering things where there is such a low probability of winning.

Is anyone a dedicated comper and is it still worth it?

Hate to say it but.

the green site Comping board is probably your best outlet for comping

It allows you to apply directly for them and also keep track of what you have applied for

I've yet to see something else in the comping scene that is so functional

I suppose I could be called a hardcore comper. I spend a few hours a day entering. I used to win pretty much every day, but now I'm lucky to see a couple of wins a month.

I've won lots of lovely prizes over the years including tablets, phones, TVs, a laptop, cash, spa breaks and holidays.

I think far more people are comping these days, making a win less likely, but at the end of the day, I comp because I enjoy it and see the prizes as a welcome bonus if and when they arrive.

I use http://www.theprizefinder.com/

I only enter a few a day - usually scan through ones that are just about to close whilst I have 63336 open in another tab. I'm very selective about what I enter so don't win often but did manage to win Eurostar tickets through Nectar last Christmas.

I went through a phase of entering competitions about 18 months ago. I won make up, meals out, event tickets and even holiday vouchers but nothing majorly big. It's quite time consuming and my enthusiasm petered out after a few months. I should start again really - it's so easy to enter while watching TV in an evening. I saw a woman in a magazine/paper recently who'd won tons of stuff - so much that she'd given her job up to be a professional comper - so for some people it's clearly worth it.

I was also really into comping around 12 years ago and was a total Loquax addict, the site was great back then. I had a lot of time on my hands as I could only get part-time work and I probably spent about 3-4 hours a day in front of the computer. I won a fair few things, nothing huge, a Gameboy Advance, some festival tickets, loads of books and CDs - I wasn't discerning about what I went for, I just applied for everything! When I found full time work I had to give it up (it was that or the relationship!).I really miss the thrill of the post arriving, my postman always used to laugh at me when another random package came through the door :)

About 5 years ago, I used to enter about 100 comps a day (via the green site). I did this for about 6 months and won loads of small value items that I didn't really want such as books, DVDs and make-up. I had a couple of £100 wins and a £200 item that i was able to ebay for cash. But I soon lost the motivation. Recently I have dabbled a bit again but so many are now twitter or fb, which I don't use, and I now see little point in entering for the low value items. Now and again I will enter a handful for high value items or cash, but have the attitude that if I win it will just come out of the blue, I don't expect it like I used to.

Me me me. In fact, I'm taking November off to get everything ready for Christmas, in time for the advents.

There are some great tools now - I use a link opener extension that opens links I draw a box over in a new tab. Then I use lastpass to fill in the forms. I have a dedicated email address with a filter to scan for winning emails.

I've won some great things. I started in June last year and I've won 2 holidays (£3k for one, a week in Cornwall for another) and much more.

I was an avid comper until recently, although I have been trying to win tickets for the Festive gift Fair,so I do pop on there sometimes. The first year I did the advents was amazing, I won loads! I also had a £1000 cash win which came in very handy as that was quite near to Christmas. Twice I have won a years supply of tea and I haven't bought a mascara in years because I usually enter comps to win them lol.

It's just the work from home syndrome with me now, I know I could be earning so I feel guilty comping. I used to enter them all day long, then I became more choosy because there really is no point in winning things that you don't want, especially as someone else would probably love to win it.

Any recommendations for the best forums to find competitions, apart from the green site?

That's amazing! Could do with a free holiday myself ;). What's a link opener extension? Sounds complicated but I assume it makes things easier to enter.

What are the advents? Two of you have mentioned them in this thread and just wondering what they are.

Lots of websites run "advent calendar" type competitions with prizes every day from Dec 1 - 24th.
