I heard them discussing the pros and cons of hypermiling on the radio yesterday, saying its a technique to save money on fuel but it could be harmful to your car.
Hi James
It is essentially techniques for getting the most MPG from your car, saving petrol, and therefore money. There are lots of videos on youtube, and posts around the internet. Most of it is common sense, such as accelerating gently, no lead foot, dont leave the engine idling when stopped.
I have done it in the past, and if you are happy to drive like you are driving miss daisy, its fine.
Thanks @Aurelian8 - that makes sense thank you! What confused me was the radio segment was warning drivers of the risks of hypermiling, where those suggestions sound sensible and harmless!
I think the warning comes from suggestions like tailgating to get slipstream or clean air (like in formula 1), and coasting down hills, which i believe is illegal.
I see! yeah that is taking it a little too far... I saw a post where someone was suggesting to turn off your engine while coasting on the motorway... not very safe
Yeah I remember messing about doing that as a kid in my first car (capri) but on a car park. Took the key out to let it coast, it was quite funny until I had to turn to avoid a bollard, and the steering lock activated.
