Does everyone trust contactless payments now then?

I remember when Chip and Pin came and replaced 'sign for everything' and half the UK was up in arms about how unsafe it was and how people would just nick your pin number by standing behind you.

Never mind the fact before that they used to take a bloody IMPRINT of your card in the supermarkets if you were buying stuff before taking a signature!! That was hardly safe!

Now we have contactless payments which I personally love and am a great advocate for ApplePay and AndroidPay as I believe it makes life so much easier and the purchase limit is set to up to £30 which I think is a very sensible idea!

Does anyone not trust this method of payment? I can't even remember the last time I carried around and paid for something with bank notes!!

I wouldn't say I trusted them either...but then again I don't think you can trust much these days either! For example cash machines can get cloned etc. Therefore, I do use contactless payments via my debit card for convenience sometimes, and it's hard not to with it coming automatically with debit cards these days.

Good point that! When I used to live in Norwich we hate right spate of that going on one Summer. Was on the front page of the local rag every other week!

I worked with a proper religious nutjob once, must have been around 1994. He'd turn up for work late and the boss would say why are you late? and his reply was he had been fighting the devil all night and didn't get much sleep. Anyhoo during a random conversation, I can't remember what started it, he predicted that mobile phones (those things i said only business people needed and whats the point of having one) would become like mini computers everyone carried around with them. We all scoffed. He also predicted that in the future people would all have a microchip implanted in their thumb which held their personal data and you could pay for things just by touching your thumb to the checkout. This chip, he solemnly told us was the mark of Satan, and all the people having it implanted would fall under his control.

Bonkers as he was, it does feel like his prediction is getting closer.

I hardly carry any cash any more, I daily use it for small transactions of only a pound or so - I love the convenience of contactless though don't have it setup on my phone, partly as it interferes with the ticket machine on the bus!

Won't have a contactless card, it seems too much like a risk and it's inconvenient to buy a sleeve just for a debit card but since i've become an iPhone user, i've been addicted to Apple Pay, so convenient and seems like it's the safest option.

Although like someone said above, is anything 100% safe anymore?

I did love contactless as it's so much easier and quicker to use. However I had my handbag snatched from me and in the 15 minutes it took for me to cancel my cards they'd already spent well over £300 in various shops using contactless payment. I'm now looking at seeing if I can take the contactless payment off of my cards so that if this happens again at least the scumbags wont be able to use the cards as easily.

I am a big fan of contactless payments. It's very convenient, except on my TSB account where it used to ask for the PIN about every third transaction. I haven't used it on that account since the cashback stopped for contactless payments.

As to cards being "cloned" (skimming the card number and expiry date is a long way from cloning) I have little concern about this. I have generally found that with all my 6 current accounts, if I do some unusual spending, they usually block the transaction straight away.

Sorry to hear @Jayro152 had her handbag stolen, although spending £300 in 15 minutes across various shops, they must have been moving like The Flash and had no queues.

Definitely not moving like flash! They went to a few off licences that were all on a parade of shops together and kept buying packets of cigarettes one after the other. So they paid then said “actually a couple more” and then some vodka etc. Until the shop got suspicious then moved on to the next one. They clearly do it all the time. Didn’t even bother covering their faces from the cctv because they know they can get away with it.

Well I do hope they get caught and lynched, or failing that serve some jail time. And of course I hope you manage to recover your money.

There's no need to trust them as far as I know. With card payments the bank is liable for any fraud, so if you suspect that a payment was unauthorized or your card was cloned, you just reach out to your bank and they'll sort it out.

It makes it easier if you're with a bank like Monzo since the instant notifications are a huge help.

Agree with this - it's not 100% secure, nothing is. I don't like to carry cash as once it's gone - it's gone unless you have some kind of insurance which can cover it(?). At least with a card there's a very clear itemised record of everything which can be disputed and in the case of fraud the banks are normally very helpful.

The number of calls I get from my bank checking transactions are OK over the last few years - they're all been fine but reassuring none the less to know the banks keep their eyes on the transactions going through the account to see if anything stands out as being suspicious.

I always find it odd when we go to America that they are SO FAR BEHIND with payment technology

You go into stores and pay on your card and they make you sign the damn recipe like it's 1995!!

Literally, NOTHING is contactless. Well I mean they can take Apple Pay / Android Pay but none of their bank cards are!!

It's really odd!

I agree that it's very strange. They also have have a widespread use of cheques still, including in companies. When I was told we write tons of cheques in the US office at work I was really confused!

I remember going to New York in 2006 and got a credit card that didn't charge fees for using it abroad. I spent the week before travelling trying to memorise the PIN. Got to NY to find that they wanted my signature, not my PIN.

I can't believe over 10 years later, payment technology in America has not really moved on!

It’s honestly really bizzare. The thing That’s even worse is when you go to a restaurant they will take your card away and swipe it away from you and then bring it back with a receipt for you to sign ??!?!?!?!?!??

I think paying with mobile payments is safer, as you can set it up with multiple security setting such as fingerprint and number codes etc. If you lose your phone you can disable everything quite easy, where if you lose your purse or wallet with money, bank cards etc someone has instant access to your money.
