Word up!

I've notice that hosting companies tend to charge a lot for domain name registration, like £11.99 for a .com renewal.

namechp.com quoted me $9.08 (around 7-8 quid) for a .com registration.

Does anyone on TMS have a namechp domain account and point the DNS to another host? (or another similar arrangement)

Yeah I’ve got a handful at tsohost still due to referral credit that I just point at hostprestos name servers

Yes just go onto the dashboard for the domain holder > nameservers > put in your hosting nameserver

I've been looking to buy a domain tonight, look at NameCheap and a few others

123 reg and co are SO cheaky. They offer 99p for the first year or two and then it becomes
£0.99/1st year when you register for 2 years or more. Additional years £9.49+VAT*,

£9.49 is about 40% more than it currently costs for a domain which is typically around the £5-£6 mark!

I thought namehceap had standard prices for domains and didn't hike after 1 year like their competition?!

I stand corrected, Namecheap seem OK

It’s 123reg that appear to love the price hike!

I have a question for you guys so, I'm with 1 and 1 right now and my plan is £1.20 p/m 12 months, after that i think it's like £12 a month or something. Is there a way i Can transfer the hosting to a different company after the 1st year and still keep the same website and stuff setup?

Yeah should be fine. Most hosting companies will transfer your site to them for free these days

I've been thinking about domain names a lot today (boring I know)

Is there a technical reason why you should keep your hosting and domain at the same company? Or should it just be a case that you get your domain at wherever is cheaper and change the nameserver to point at your hosting company of choice?

I've generally always kept the two together but now I'm not so sure why. I know a lot of hosting companies offer a free domain with hosting so it tends to start off that way but I imagine there are major savings to be had if you shop around for your next domain instead of using your hosting provider!

I'm about to transfer a domain to Name cheap to save £2 a year. My hosting is up for renewal 28th Nov, thinking of splitting hosting and domain between different providers.

Transferring the domain sounds like a right PITA. Name cheap site is confusing as to what they do or do not provide

Are you not just dumping the domain there and changing nameserver?

I think so lol. But what happens to the dedicated email address for my site, i.e. Support@...
I can't see if Name cheap offer that inclusive

It should just be the case then if you put in your nameservers for your hosting company then THEY deal with all the email side of things

cool. Moving the domain to Name Cheap would soon save a good chunk of £££. I've been quoted between £11.99-15 for 1 year domain reg by various hosting companies. And another host wanted paying to transfer the domain, as my current host doesn't use cpanel (apparently)
