So I put up this blog post yesterday

It talks about how you can earn money from what are classed as 'alternative investments' via the Koia app such as expensive watches, Spirits, Trading Cards, NFTs.

I would say it seems these sort of investments are becoming more and more popular - Has anyone on here made long term investments in these sort of items rather than the usual 'stocks and shares' etc.

I would say expensive watches, Rolex, Breitling etc are going to hold a lot more value than some other commodities that people purchase. Depends on the model, rarity and service history of course!

I know a few people who use 'alternative' forms of investments.

Mainly its about putting money somewhere that is a bit more 'interesting' than then bank (or stocks/shares).

I know someone who has quite a bit of wine. They have an 'investment' manager who phones them up and says, "We've been offered 'x' for your 10 cases of 'y'. And I've just got in that Blue Nun you were after so could then get you 5 cases of that for the same cash." In theory they could get their wine sent to them but they just tend to trade it (with the occasional case or 5 sent to them for Christmas). Its more fun for them and they get to own (occasionally drink) some very nice plonk. I'm not sure how much money they have actually made as most has not been liquidated (or HAS been liquidated *hic*).

Another chum owns watches. 'An investment you can wear'. Good if you have the cash to buy the right thing. Rolexes always do well (in the main - there are some poor fashion Rolex choices!) so they don't lose money and often 'trade up' to get better watches. Their collection could be liquidated - Rolexes do tend to appreciate so holding (or wearing) a watch for 5 years should see you own it for zero cost and possible profit. Just make sure you keep all the paperwork!

I've ANOTHER chum (humble brag on my friends!) who has classic cars. The right choice really has worked in their favour. I met someone who purchased a load of classic cars in kit form when they were 'just' 25-30 years old. No-one was interested. Now he has had offers for 200x times what he paid for just one of them. He has spent money building them but the right choice, at the right time, with actual cash, has meant he is now sitting pretty.

It all comes down to the asset. Choose the right one and you'll do well. Choose poorly and you might get no-where near your money back.

Whether it is worthbuying 'fractions'? I'm not sure. If you own a classic car or a rolex or a old master, then at least you can drive/wear/look at it. This isn't even a dodgy timeshare where you'd get 20 minutes with a 70 year old whiskey.

Make sure you understand this bit "Collectibles often have high transaction costs as well as significant costs associated with storage and insurance that may reduce investment returns; storage and insurance fees are collected upfront and shown in the Koia App."

Maybe offer to look after the whiskey yourself....*hic* :D

A few key points with these types of 'alternative' investments:
  • Often a large capital investment needed
  • Illiquidity compared to equities and bonds
  • Potentially high costs for insurance/storage
However, you might find something that's uncorrelated to the mainstream financial markets.

Have you ever had any of them valued?

I've never had any valued but I do keep an eye on what the same ones resell at on eBay and a card auction website. A few months ago I won a card that is worth around £200.

With any trading card as well you can get them graded which means you send them off to a company who inspects it and checks the quality. If you get a 10 rating then it adds to the value - dependent on card of course.

I've seen a few of those toy / card conventions happening in Leeds and some of the money being throw around those places is crazy.

I still remember as a kid I had a friend who's parents had bought him an absolute boatload of Star Wars toys (characters, ships etc.) and this in the mid / late 80s so it was more than likely OG stuff - lord knows what it would all be worth now but sods law says its probably all in landfill somewhere

Cars I wonder could also be viewed as an alternative investment. I've been to some classic car shows and while these vehicles from the 70s/80s/90s etc might cost a fair bit to maintain I think the demand is there from other buyers for people to turn a profit.

ESPECIALLY on VW Campervans which is something I've always wanted to own

The oldest VW Campervans can go for silly money

Split screens
Bays

even the T3 vans (what I think of as builder vans) are making strong money in a good condition.

Then you get the 'newer' vans...where a builder sells it on ebay, someone buys it, puts a 'Quicksilver' sticker on the side and calls it a 'surf van'. And adds ££££ to the price! :D

In 2000 I had the opportunity of buying a Porsche 912 for not much at all...and I should have taken it.

Regarding getting on the 'classic cars' market now, you can still do it for future classics.

The people buying the MK1 Escorts now are those that lusted after them as kids. 50 years later they are retired/coming into a bit of money and reliving their childhood fantasy.

Same with Capris.

Look at the price of good 205GTIs (1.6.or 1.9) or Renault 5 GTTurbos or Ford XR2s.

If you have the space today, what would you buy from the last 20 years to stick in a barn for 20 years?

Some of the Lotuses
Maybe a Scooby (although probably older than 20 years)
And I'd be getting as many MK1 Audi TT (225) as I could find...and I'd park them next to a collection of late 90's Boxsters....

Has anyone actually tried the Koia app?

I have an IFISA which is classed as an alternative investment. It lends money to community and 'green' projects so unlikely to make me millions!

In some of the FB groups I am in, i've seen people asking for £16000 (Kylian Mbappe rookie card for example) for some cards, it really is crazy.

I've never got into Star Wars but I wish I did purely for the memorabilia, some of that stuff goes for a lot!

Cars over 40 years old are exempt from road tax as well of course.

I've got a 1969 Lotus Elan that I bought around 10 years ago. It's more than doubled in price since I bought it, with barely any maintenance costs. The basic service is simple enough that I do it myself with a visit to a specialist garage once every three years for a full everything service.
It will need a respray soon and probably a retrim of the interior to get top dollar if I sell it. That's gonna cost a lot.

I've also got a 1988 Toyota MR2 and a 1998 Fiat coupe. Price hasn't moved much on either of them since I bought them 2 and 5 years ago. I still think they are excellent cars and currently undervalued. Rust is the biggest enemy of those vehicles. I'm getting rust bubbles around the arches on both of them. Its quite expensive to get it repaired professionally.

This is a good auction house. I could spend a fortune here if I had a spare million. Motoring memorabilia is also very desirable at the moment. https://www.youtube.com/user/AngliaCarAuctions

I'm not sure the road tax exemption is as important as the MOT exemption.... ;)

MR2 (mk1) I think will be a collectors item and the mk2 will probably follow suit. Not sure about the mk3 though.

The fiat coupe is a strange one as some people loved the look and others didn't...I'm not sure it was 'in' enough to make the grade. Plus its a Fiat! :incheek:

Future-Future Classics

M140i - or maybe the twin turbo 135i
the 'homage' golf gti mk7
The Lupo GTI
The New Beetle RSI
The RS4 (v8 version)
Z3/Z4
Fiat500

I've got a ford so I'm not sure I'll be making my millions from it! :D

Ooops. My mistake. Mine is the Elan+2 which is the rarer, but less desirable coupe version. Its a lot less than the 2 seater which can go for north of £40K now for one in concourse winning condition. Personally I prefer mine as I'm not keen on open top cars. Paid £8250 ten years ago. You can still pick a good one up for under 20k now.

Agree with all of those. I would add to the list: the smart roadster, Audi R8, Civic type R and Mitsubishi EVO. I like the new Mx5 too although there are lots around. Maybe some of the limited edition tuned hot hatches, like the Clio Williams too. Not sure they will ever make versions of electric cars like that.

Which brings me to another point to consider though..... What about availability of petrol in 10 years time? At some point petrol stations are going to start disappearing as demand falls and electric cars take over.

The original rubber keys one, boxed and fully working has got to be over £100 plus more for the games

I've got an Atari 2600 hibernating in a cupboard somewhere. Need to dig that out at some point. Question is - will it work with a modern telly?
