When my city council sent me an application form, they said as a guide the count at the last General Election finished at 4am. The training session is only an hour for pol clerks so it must vary from council to council.

yeah I mean we have a general AND local in Leeds so we have both going on at once.

For some councils it may just be a general that they are counting for

Well, everywhere is different. I'm sure in one recent year (maybe referendum year?) they counted the locals over the weekend instead. Maybe it depends how many people they can find to count.

Re: General Election 2015 - Work as a Poll Clerk

The pay varies from council to council.

After enquiring all central London councils about vacancies I got a few "we have everyone we need" and a couple "sure, we're still looking, please fill out this form".

I got accepted by Westminster for the count (no poll clerk positions available). The working schedule will be from 21h to 3h30 (unless there's a recount) and the pay is £128.75 gross (taxable) plus £25.00 (non-taxable) towards travel expenses.

Still waiting to hear back from Islington and Tower Hamlets (the other two I filled out forms for).

That's a good rate of pay for 6 hours work

I got accepted to be a poll clerk at my local polling station. It'll be a long day but it'll be nice to have some extra money coming in.

Got confirmation this morning that I'll be poll clerk at my local polling station. Slightly disappointed I'm not involved in the count. Maybe next time :)

We've had people drop out literally on the day and needed people so you may find when you go to take the ballot box to your main location if they are doing the count there they may be able to facilitate you

Just keep in dialogue with them

Re: General Election 2015 - Work as a Poll Clerk

Just been invited for the overnight (Parliamentary) count. It's going to be a long day but definitely not turning it down considering the pay rate!

Anyone who's done poll clerk/counts before - any tips for what you take with you? I think I'm going to be needing a lot of Red Bull lol.

There is no turning back now...

It may pay well but it's tiring, especially when you're dealing with a local ward with two or more seats up for grabs, counting at 3am in the morning! : :-\

Re: General Election 2015 - Work as a Poll Clerk

Ours has three elections, parliamentary, town and parish. Biggest elections for our council EVER apparently and my first one! Typical! Hopefully it will be busy and not snoozeville! Looking forward to it. Will help me give up smoking anyway as we are not allowed to go outside all day. Bet the sun will be shining :) :(

Re: General Election 2015 - Work as a Poll Clerk

My ward only has Parliamentary elections but other areas of the city have council ones too. There were a couple of parish council elections but they were uncontested. Got my Returning Officer briefing & poll clerk training session tomorrow & all my count info arrived over the weekend. Just trying to work out what to take with me now :)

Ooh this is a good idea!

I doubt I could do it tho, having small children. But a great opportunity.

Re: General Election 2015 - Work as a Poll Clerk

Hello! - a very grateful newbie here, I've been accepted for Thursday's count, it wouldn't have gone through my mind to apply had I not stumbled upon this site - thank you!

I received all the count information in the post today and notice it says it's advised to bring a snack, but we're not allowed food at the counting tables. Does anyone know whether there are any other similar restrictions/regulations? - for instance, will I be able to keep my phone and a bag with my other valuables (keys, wallet etc.) with me at the counting table?
