Had an email from my Council about working as a PO for next year's local elections (and Police and Crime Commissioner elections) on May 6th. It came with a lot of questions about the suitability of my polling station for holding a socially distanced vote. They are having to do a risk assessment on every single polling station within the city (that's nearly a hundred), so imagine that all Councils are having to do the same.

They're proposing to take on extra staff to manage the voters as 'greeters', and I suspect that a lot of people won't want to work as Poll Clerks if the situation is anything like it is at the moment.

Would you do a day in a Polling Station for £200-300 if we still have Covid-19?
Yeah for that sort of money I would

I would probably do it. I'd get exposed to the virus if I worked in a supermarket or in a shop, and would definitely not make that much money!

Anyone involved in the votes this year then

I'm surprised how many local elections are taking place!!

That's a LOT of earning opportunity!

It's only March so I would hope there is still time - Which is your council?

FAO of the Elections Team

Are you recruiting for any temporary workers for the Election such as poll clerks / vote counters?

etc..

Thank you for your wisdom ;)

I work at my local council offices and a lot of the jobs go to people who are already working for them but our council do put the Election work under the Jobs section and you have to apply online and then if successful you will be called to do some training

I have my election briefing on-line meeting tonight. Been accepted as a poll clerk for the Scottish national election.
Quite looking forward to it and of course the extra £2oo (ish) pounds :)

Man, online training! What would we do without it!

Do you still get paid for attending the training, I'm sure Leeds City Council used to

Yep, it's about £30 for a couple of hours training via Zoom, but man, it's dull!

I'm PO-ing on the Thursday and vote counting on the Friday, but should come out with about £300 after tax.

For the first time I can remember, the two clerks at my station today were both under 30. Now, as an oldie myself, yes I can and do use QR codes etc. but it was interesting that they were doing the checking of the list and scanning and the 'mature' helpers seemed to be doing more of the guiding people on where to go, making sure no-one ran off with the sanitiser etc.

Maybe it was coincidence - but it was nice to see compared with the pompous gits you're usually faced with (perhaps that's just my village/tiny town though)

Did my shift on Thursday for the Scottish election.

Long day but I have to say I really quite enjoyed it. There were 4 other people doing it and 3 of them were really nice (The 4th was ok just not on my wavelength) and as long as it was with the constant flow of people it really didn't seem that long.

Just waiting for the money to hit the bank now :)

Not sure if there is a separate thread for the 2022 elections, but if you want to earn some extra money in May, now is the time to contact your local Council. Pay is circa £200 for Poll Clerks and £300 for Presiding Officers, before tax. There are other roles available for evening work (Count assistants).

Not all Councils have elections though. Details of which Councils have elections in 2022 are here:
