I work every year throughout the elections (and the weeks/months prior to it) because of my job.

However last year we had a few members on here who sign up to do counting on the day / evening / through the night.

It pays well, 9/10 you can take the time off work as 'special leave'

Pay for a regular poll clerk is just shy of £200 for one days work!!

Generally all you need to do is look on your local council website and you will see job openings for the following jobs - Just apply for them and join me on the 'no sleep till Saturday' money train!

Presiding Officer
  • Poll Clerk
  • Senior Counting Assistant
  • Counting Assistant
  • Postal Vote Opening Clerks

Re: General Election 2015 - Work as a Poll Clerk

I've made contact with someone at the council last week who said they would pass on my details. I've had nothing and don't want to leave it to the last minute. I have looked online myself, have I missed it? Jon can you have a quick check for Colchester/Essex? I'll give them a ring Monday otherwise.

Just as a fyi

If possible you want to get in on the postal vote checking which runs for 2 weeks prior to the election (at least in Leeds) and you should again be able to claim special leave from your existing work place if you have one

Re: General Election 2015 - Work as a Poll Clerk

I've poll clerked once - I don't work for the Council so don't get any leave. In my area we were asked to attend a 2 hour training session a few weeks before the election and this is included in the fee you get.

Yes it is easy money as all you're doing is crossing names off a list and dishing out cards but it is a VERY long day (6am to 10.30pm) and can be VERY boring. We get a high turnout in this area so you're kept going with the old dearies who want a chat, but if you're in an area with low turnout you might wait long periods between "customers". There are no official breaks - not even loo breaks - so you have to sort that out with whoever you're working with. You are going to be sitting at a desk with someone from 7am to 10pm and it might not be someone you like. When I did it I had a reasonable nice older lady but the other polling station (across the other side of the hall) was a young student lad and an elderly lady who had nothing in common and they were both bored stiff by each other. Having said that, I did knit most of a cardigan during quiet times.

Content them by ringing or email

01670 624811 or email elections@northumberland.gov.uk

Explain you would like to work as a poll clerk on the elections and they will sort you out.

Which position pays the most money?

well if its your first time doing it I think you can only be a poll clerk or a postal vote vetter or counter on the night

I'm also fairly sure that the rate goes up again after 1am on the main count night

Which council would you be looking at working with?

Re: General Election 2015 - Work as a Poll Clerk

Do you know if we're restricted to the council we live in? Or can we apply to neighbouring councils as well?

After reading this thread I've sent an email to my council's electoral services enquiring about poll clerk vacancies and filled out a form for a neighbouring council...
