Hi all,

my partner has been a professional baker/cake creator for 4-5 years now and has done well with one off celebration cakes and afternoon tea packages.

We've started playing with Etsy and have only listed a couple of items so far to see how it goes. Plenty more ideas for listings but making sure we're getting it right first.

Her shop is: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Fluffyvanilla?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=884329269

Just wondered if anyone has any tricks or tips where Etsy is concerned? Do their ads tend to be worth paying for? Is it just a waiting game for sales or is there anything worthwhile doing to promote your listings?

Any advice appreciated.

I started off paying $1 per day for advertising, that’s the cheapest option, I started to notice that my sales weren’t coming from the ads though so I cancelled it and sales continued.

It depends though, the more sales your item gets the higher up the search you go. Might be worth getting your friends to buy some to bump it up the list.

Or it might be worth paying more than $1 to advertise.

I’ve read that you should have 10 items in the shop at least. And I’ve read that adding new items is a way to bump sales. Not sure if true.

Good luck with it all!

Thanks Rich. Will get some more listings posted and see how it goes. Managed a couple of sales over the last week or so but always nice to have more!

I've heard this too.

ideas to consider:
  • Undercut your rivals. But not by so much that people question what might be wrong with yours to make them so cheap. You can slowly increase prices once sales take off.
  • They seem to rank quite well with google so think carefully about the keywords used in your titles as they can be pulled up in google searches and send people to you.
  • Provide options in the drop down box thing so people can select what flavour they want, which will simplify the ordering process. One for each flavour and another for mixed.
  • Offer free postage
  • Offer gift wrapping, maybe with a personalised message card.
  • Try listing some decorations or flavourings or something that will help get your sales up and will increase the number of items in your store. Maybe you could offer original hand made decorations or cutters or something.
  • Include the weight along with numbers or sizes. I can see I can order 8 or 12 brownies but I don't know how big they are.
  • Push it on your social media in relevant groups, maybe try offering a discount code.
  • Send free cookies to all your friends at The money Shed !!!

I agree with the above comment about google search - I'm in marketing and companies pay hundreds of thousands of pounds to rank on google search.
If you consider what people will search when looking for something similar to what you're selling, make sure you litter those words into both the title of the item and the description, and there's a good chance it will come up on google when someone types those words in.
