This is an opportunity I've come across where you can teach people English as a second Language (ESL)

The Requirements
Be a native English speaker

Have a Bachelor's degree

Own a desktop or laptop computer with high speed internet and audio/video capabilities

The role is contracted for 12 months with the average working hours being 15 hours per week.

You will be using DaDaABC's real-time video English teaching platform, aided by the teaching materials appearing on the same screen. Think of this as a specialised form of Skype, where the outline of your video conversation is already laid out for you. That's right; you do not even have to create your own teaching materials, however you are encouraged to review the materials that DaDaABC provide to you prior to each class. Always be prepared!

The Types of Online ESL Classes with DaDaABC

You will teach three types of online English classes. These online education class types are - trial, elective and major. Trial classes last roughly 15 minutes as the Chinese student is trialling the platform for the first time, whereas the major classes can last from half an hour to an hour.

One awesome perk of the role is the opportunity to create bonds with the students. The online teaching platform allows for you to work with the same children consistently, so you get to see the positive influence of your teaching as they progress over time. How Much Money You Can Earn as a DaDaABC Online Teacher The DaDaABC website lists the possibility of teachers potentially earning as much as £20 per hour, but don't get too excited, as this is not the set wage for every teacher.

The rate of pay is determined by your individual performance in your demo class and training. So make sure to be at your best from the start!

There are rewards for your performance as a teacher, such as pay raises and bonuses, and you are paid in full for all the time you are teaching with DaDaABC. However, if a student does not show up to a class, then you will receive half payment for that period.

To apply simply go to https://www.dadaabc.com/teacher/job and hit Apply Now

Yeah. I'd want to look at a contract and get all that nailed down. Please, proceed with caution - these types of sites are notoriously scammy. If a company is willing to take on unqualified and inexperienced teachers who don't have a professional teaching qualification then that's the first warning sign. Claiming that your rate is based on how the class goes is the second. Having to give free demo lessons and only potentially being compensated with half-pay for your time is the third.

I've seen ads by this company before, the last time it stated that they were looking for a person with 3 years teaching experience for payment of $20USD (£15ish), so someone with zero experience is likely to be offered less. If I remember correctly then they're a Chinese-based company (so remember that China is 8 hours ahead of the UK) and are classes for children, so I guess that having more in-depth grammar and language knowledge isn't as important as for teaching adults, but you have to be comfortable and confident in being able to teach English to beginners - so 'reviewing' the resources before the lesson would be paramount. Being able to speak a language and teach it are two very different things!

I'm not saying to avoid these sites, I guess they're worth a go to see what happens...but definitely check out reviews before committing. There are lots of ESL job groups and forums to scope out the reputation of a company.

Just read this on Reddit:

" I was straight up told that because I wasn't white, parents might not like me as much and I would have a more difficult time maintaining steady students--which hasn't been the case." o_O

So sad that in the 21st century, this whole 'white is better' issue still exists :(. At least s/he didn't have any problems anyway.

Thanks for the information on this. I worked as an English language assistant for a year when I left uni about 40 years ago so this would be an interesting one to do as I approach retirement! I presently work part time in adult learning but my contract hours are being reduced from August so I will certainly have a look at this one or similar companies.

The biggest problem I see is trying to teach someone a language when you can't speak their language. Would make communication quite a challenge.

The biggest problem I see is trying to teach someone a language when you can't speak their language. Would make communication quite a challenge.

Actually many people prefer it this way - it means that you're completely immersed in the target language and can learn bottom-up without trying to 'translate' your native language - many words, phrases, and concepts can't directly translate from one language to another in any case.

What I think is difficult with online teaching is not being truly face-to-face, even if you have video. It's surprising how much body language can help with communication - I'm an ESL teacher and I gesture a lot when I'm teaching :D also sometimes drawing a quick picture or showing an image is extremely useful.

I love teaching beginners because you get to see progress much more quickly, but it can be a struggle for native English speakers to grade down their language to the relevant level (especially if English is the only language that you speak) because it's amazing to realise how many phrasal verbs and fixed phrases that we use that are fairly simple words but they're not literal. I remember one of my first ever training lessons I said that we were going to 'go over' their homework together and my class had no idea what I meant - they knew 'go' and they knew 'over' but not that 'go over' meant to review and check.

Tried to apply for this but was having trouble submitting my application. Emailed them several times but had no reply. Really disappointing as I really wanted to give this one a try!

I'm not surprised about this, not only online, it is the same in China. To be honest, I don't think it is completely the parent's fault. Generally speaking, it was bad reputations from not white people too much. Although it not much the case in more open cities. But since this is internet teaching, it is more to provide to the people who don't have easy education on the local education. When you go to the rural area in China, it is still the case. Sadly, Chinese company have to take this into account.

@leighm88 @pepsi9983 I applied last year, I'm a qualified teacher but didn't get in, so not really sure what they are looking for. Think they want an TEfL qualification

I got an interview and received an email from them saying that I had the job but would need faster internet. My heart wasn't in it though as I found the interview really embarrassing. You need to behave like a clown. I didn't accept the job.

Like my interview was with an adult pretending to be a 6 year old child and I had to sing songs to her etc. If you look on youtube there are practice lesson examples and that is how you are expected to act.
