I thought it was about time we had a thread about Football Index. As its quite a complicated product I will kick it off with a guide to what it is and how it works. This is just the tip of the iceberg really. There is a lot to learn.

What is football index?
Its a website that is like a stock market trading in footballers. It is similar to a traditional stock market except you are buying and selling Shares in football players. Note it is regulated under the gambling commission regulations and not financial services regulations. You will hear lots of terms like: Shares, Investing, dividends etc but it is a form of gambling. When you buy a share in a player you are essentially buying a 3 year bet that your chosen player will do well. I personally treat it like a fun hobby that is making me some money, rather than a sure-fire investment.

Each share only last 3 years?
Yes. I had trouble with this concept at first but all you do is sell them just before expiry and buy them back again if you want to continue holding. In reality most people trade in and out of players long before the 3 years is up.

How will it make me money?
In several ways:
1. Capital appreciation. When lots of people buy a player, his price goes up. When lots of people sell the price goes down. People will buy a player for lots of reasons, but it comes down to how much potential people think that player has. Drivers for buying might include: when a player is doing well, scores a hat trick, a new young player being talked about a lot, when there are transfer rumours concerning them, If they are about to return from injury, if they have just been included in a national squad. Identifying players likely to increase before everyone else is the real skill. Someone once said on the FI forum “its not about picking the best players... it's about picking the players who other traders will pick in the future“

2. Performance Buzz Dividends. Every match in the top* leagues and cups counts towards dividends for the top performing Defender, Midfielder, and Attacker that day. The more matches being played, the higher the dividends. Performance is calculated by adding up everything the player does on the pitch and assigning a score to each player. This is called Performance Buzz. Or PB. Players more likely to score lots of PB are the most desirable and usually the most expensive. There is also an additional dividend paid to the ‘star player’ this is the player with the most points over all that day.

3. In Play Dividends (IPDs) Added last year to encourage more active trading IPDs only last for the first 30 days you own a share. During this time you will earn an additional 1p per share for every goal scored by an Att and Mid, 2p per goal by a Def and 1p for each clean sheet by a GK. +1p for an assist by any position.

4. Media Buzz. Players score Media Buzz (MB) points every time they are mentioned in the media. At the end of each day the player with the most MB receives a dividend. There are more payouts if there are no matches that particular day or if there is a promotion on (like last summer they paid out for the top 5 places during the off season)

5. Bonuses. In the past, there have been 5% and 10% deposit or purchase bonuses. These are very lucrative as you get the bonus in cash.

Can you lose money on Football Index?
Yes. It is gambling remember. But unlike traditional gambling its not just win or lose on one Match. Because each share lasts 3 years you have an excellent chance of increasing your money overall, even if the price of some individual players dip in the short term. The index has risen month on month every year since its inception in 2015. But it’s very important to invest in a range of players and not put all your eggs in one basket. I am well up on my initial investment but still showing a loss on a couple of players, so it's important to diversify. The worse case scenario is if one of your players moves to a league not covered by Football Index (like China or USA), sustains a career ending injury, or unexpectedly retires.

How do the trackers work?
They don’t. Don’t buy them. They just buy 1 share in each of the top 50 or whatever players. You end up with a portfolio of 50 single shares.

How do I buy shares?
Shares cost from 8p to £8.00 depending on the player. Just search for the player you want in the search bar and you will see buy and sell buttons next to his name. You can buy up to 300 shares at a time.

How do I sell a player?
2 options. Market sell, or instant sell. The sell price you see on the screen is the instant sell price. This is how much you would get if you wanted to sell the player limitedly. You can always get more by selling to market and can set a reserve price if you want. To sell to market just click the sell button and then ‘add an order’ and your shares will be put in the queue to sell at the current ‘buy’ price.

How does Football index make money out of this?
They charge a simple 2% commission on all shares you sell.

There’s lots more I could say but I don’t want to make this too long. You could also watch this video

Please feel free to ask any questions or add recommendations advice or strategies of your own and I will add more later.

Thanks for this @homie

Gonna give this a go in February

Questions

1) How much did you start with / how much do you recommend starting with?

2) is the market as lucrative outside of the UK football season?

3) When events happen like Euros2020 coming up what does that do to the market?

Questions
1) How much did you start with / how much do you recommend starting with?

2) is the market as lucrative outside of the UK football season?

3) When events happen like Euros2020 coming up what does that do to the market?

1. I started with £200 last June. Very quickly built a list of players I was interested in so added another £300 so I had scope to buy enough of all the players I wanted to. I would start with the minimum to trigger the bonus then build up from there.

2. It can be, it mainly revolves around transfers in the summer. Another thing to look out for is youth team players joining the squad for pre-season friendlies. Although be warned - I got burnt by Rhian Brewster of Liverpool. He was scoring goals galore in the pre season and Klop was raving about him and suggesting he would feature in the 1st team. Bastard never started a single match and is going off on loan now to a Championship side.

3. Events like the Euros will skew the market towards national team players. All the matches at the Euros will be eligible for dividends. I would expect players like Sterling and Rashford to continue to rise in the run up to the finals and then prices likely to drop at whichever point England go out.

Additional: - New promotion just started for January which will refund a net loss of over £10 on shares you buy in January, up to £500. This would effectively make investing a lager sum risk free. You need to opt in from the link on the main page. Open to existing customers as well as new.

Note: it is net loss from all your january trades. So if you lost £15 on Kane but made £6 profit on Pogba then your overall position would be -£9 which wouldn't trigger the refund. If they both lost you £5 then that would be a net
-£10, so you'd get the refund. Small portfolios probably won't trigger it anyway but nice to have the safety net if spending a lot of money.

There is a new promotion running through February. Players bought during Feb now gain "Super match day points" which to cut a long story short, a player now acquires when they earn normal Performance buzz points. These new points are then added up at the end of the month and divided by 250 to convert to (a small amount of) cash. To get you started you earn an additional 10,000 points on the first £20 you spend on players each day.

In my opinion its unnecessarily complicated and screams of someone in the marketing dept trying to justify their job but coming up with a low cost promotion just for the sake of it.

If you were planning to buy players this month then in might be a nice little extra bonus but I am personally not planning to buy players just to take advantage of this as its not going to bring in a lot of money and there might be a big queue of unwanted players in market being sold off at the end of the month when the promotion ends.

I have done this through January and to be honest, I am about to cash out. I am about the same as I was when invested so would lose if cashed out as you pay 2% on cashing out, luckily I did the Jan promo so will get my £500 back. Like most things, the time and effort put in will maximise the rewards. I am not a football fan so do not follow it and sold when players were down and bought what others were buying which sounds like it helps the way the system works but never saw any big spike in price increases. It seems quite a good system and one to keep an eye on but I suggest spending some time with it and not to worry about losing a bit of money here and there to help get a real feel for it.

Just realised I have been with Football index for one year now. 1st may being my anniversary. So here's a little update of where I am after that year. Obviously the market is weird at the moment with no football but they are keeping things alive with extra media payouts, which I seem to be making more from than I was when football was actually on! I haven't really changed my portfolio since lockdown started.

Total invested £700.00
Current portfolio balance £954.00
Nothing withdrawn, so on paper profit of £254.00
This includes dividends paid of £50.66 which I re-invested.

Best purchase - Jaydon Sancho +£27.66 profit
Worst purchase - Mo Salah -£8.88 Loss
Best team's players for media buzz points - Manchester United
Best team's players for performance buzz points - Liverpool
Biggest surprise - Fred, had a loss on him for the first months but held and now £10 in profit.
Player I most want to punch - Paul Pogba. Just because.
Player I most regret not buying Bruno Fernandes (was £2.50 last year now £9.50)

Not planning to add any more, but will keep reinvesting my dividends, aiming for a target balance of £1000. At that point I might withdraw the profit. Not making me rich over night but better than the 0.9% from my ISA.

Been on the rocks for the last 9 months. Sadly some people with big stakes were in denial and were hostile to anyone putting out warning messages.

Where do you think it all went wrong for them?

No idea. I took various reload offers but it was always quick in and out. I never understood how it worked, so I wouldn't invest in something I don't understand. People were making nice profits, but that can't be a sustainable business model. It was probably always heading for disaster once the cash ran out, but from what I've read the management started making regular changes over the last year or so that changed the basis of which people had made their bets.

So probably a mix of bad management and unsustainable business model.

Where do you think it all went wrong for them?

Poor management mostly. They kept changing things and pissing off their main user base. Then the much anticipated order book system didn't deliver and caused a loss in confidence in the system. Add to that the cancelled Euros caused a lot of lost momentum as people had bought players in advance of that and were now just sitting on their hands waiting to see what would happen with Covid and everything. Then just after Christmas they cut the dividends and basically killed it over night.

I invested £500 and it was valued at approaching £1000 before last summer. Final valuation before they pulled the plug it was down to £90. I doubt I'll even get that back.
