Not a money earning opportunity but certainly a money saving one. Coursera, EdX (US based) and FutureLearn (UK based) all offer free, distance learning based courses on every topic you can imagine, pitched at University level.

Haven't much experience with EdX and Future learn but Coursera is very good. You can choose to pay for a verified certificate which is about $50 I think and this is the route you're going to want to go down if you're doing the course to show an employer. If you're just wanting to stretch your brain a bit then the free version is fine.

Definitely worth exploring - there are so many different courses you're guaranteed to find something of interest.

I'm a big fan of these MOOCs. Just can't seem to find the time. I think the Open University offers some as well, via OpenLearn.

I've done a Futurelearn course recently. I really enjoyed it. I also signed up to do one which started in Sep but because I suddenly found myself needing to put in more hours with 63336, I didn't have time to do it. The good thing though is I can still access all the course material - I just don't get the interactive chat-to-the-course-leaders/participants bit.

Hello all I am a newbie to this forum, I come from the green site where some of you will know me as the user of the same name.

I have experience of attending Moocs via Coursera - I have completed courses on Creativity, Innovation and Change and then another course on Public Speaking. Both were delivered by professional lecturers who knew their topics and provided a great level of education for free.

I like the idea of sharing knowledge for free and the lecturers tend to use the courses to gather research figures and create connections to people worldwide, so you know they are getting something for their time which makes the long-term viability of Moocs seem a lot more likely.

Absolutely adore FutureLearn, only get slightly annoyed when I have to pay to get the certificates... Worth it though!

Never used any myself but I have a colleague who is currently doing a course on Futurelearn and she is really enjoying it. Its something I would probably look into more if I had the time. Would actually like to do a Masters but there's the small issue of money! At least these are free :)

I'm doing a fab course on FutureLearn in Forensic Psychology atm. It's really good.

Also doing a Tetris boolean maths type course, and a North Korea one, via EDX and Coursera.

All of them charge for certifications I have found but that's fair enough. I tend to just do the courses for free and just be happy in the knowledge I've done the course. If I wanted to show competency for a particular course I might spend out on the certificate but I can't imagine that happening any time soon.

I keep seeing lots of interesting courses on future learn I just need to motivate myself into completing them. Alison has a good range as well. I haven't really looked much at the others. Free education however is great. I like how you have the option to pay for the certificate if you wish to have one.

Agree - I did an Archaeology one with my 11 year old and it was great fun - and completely different from anything i'd done before.
